Evaluating NU's out of conference S.O.S.

Nebraska
Sept. 5: vs. Florida Atlantic, D+

Sept. 12: vs. Arkansas State, F

Sept. 19: at Virginia Tech, A-

Sept. 26: vs. Louisiana-Lafayette, F

Overall grade: D

If Nebraska doesn't win at least nine games with this nonconference slate, I'll jog from Lincoln to Omaha in my skivvies in the dead of winter. Other than the impending loss at Tech, the Huskers will have a soft slate. After the Cajun romp, they'll ease into Big 12 play with games against decimated Missouri and Texas Tech, then back-to-back gimmes vs. Iowa State and Baylor. C'mon guys, show some pride and give the Big Red nation more.

Other than the "impending loss at [VT]Tech" comment, not a bad take. I do think that when the season is over, that the Sun Belt teams we play this year could have surprisingly respectable records. Unfortunately for them (and NU) is that most of those wins will come against other Sun Belt competition.

Nov. 5: at East Carolina, B-

Overall grade: B

This is the best nonconference slate in the Top 25. Having Tyrod Taylor and Darren Evans in his arsenal means coach Frank Beamer won't be afraid of any defense, and 'Bama will have a great wall to throw up against them. What a matchup that should be. And the revenge factor will play into both the Nebraska and ECU showdowns. Only thing that could make this schedule better is if Chad Pennington and Randy Moss decided to re-enroll at Marshall.

sigh, well, at least they got their facts straight. I mean, something like this...

Oh, and how does Oklahoma State get a B- for their game with Houston?! Did I miss something these past few years? HOUSTON? College football houston? I also don't see how this works, that we get the same overall grade as LSU:

I did notice that they gave LSU a D- for scheduling UL Lafayette, and gave us an F for scheduling that same team. :confucius I guess the Cajuns must be a stronger team when they play the Tigers.

 
If you look at the OOC schedule for most teams he rated in that article, ours doesn't look so bad.

It's our 2010 OOC schedule that's truly embarrassing...

Yeah, D is too harsh. C would have been about right. If we had scheduled a halfway decent school from a BCS conference for the fourth game our OOC schedule would be ideal. Like if we played a team like Purdue or maybe Maryland instead of Louisiana-Lafayette.

NU plays them the week after LSU. Maybe they figure that after LSU, UL Lafayette won't have any healthy players left, hence NU will be playing the UL cheer leading squad, hence the "F".

Wow. I see this as a highly inaccurate take. Missouri and Texas Tech are not decimated. Inexperienced? Yes. Decimated? No. If we split with Missouri and Texas Tech, that is all that can be expected. And Baylor is by no means a gimme. A win? probably. maybe not. More than likely, yes. A gimme? No way.

A nine win season should not be the expectation. It would be nice. It is possible. But we have a tough schedule. Texas tech, Kansas, Missouri, Baylor, and Colorado could all be wins... or all losses. Neither is very likely. Rather, against that crew a 3-2 record is a reasonable guess (or a 2-3 record). Expect losses to OU and VTech. So an 8-4 or a 7-5 regular season seems reasonable an expectation. If NU wins 9 games, that means they go 4-1 vs. Texas tech, Kansas, Missouri, Baylor, and Colorado --- such would be wonderful. It may happen. But... I would not expect it.

A 9 win season (regular season) would be quite an accomplishment.

 
Florida Atlantic is coming off a good season in their regards THEY WON A BOWL GAME i believe last year. So what they are in the sun belt. They still won a bowl game. And Va tech is not an A-. and that Va tech game is a DAMN toss up IMHO

I could only think of two possible explanations for this:

1) CBS has a contract with the SEC so pimping their teams with D-'s and opposed to F's makes the conference teams that will be playing appear to be more credible.

2) Both teams play in Louisiana, so LSU is keeping the blowout win within state borders which makes it a bit more acceptable.

Yes, I hate to see what they have to say about our 2010 schedule
