New York, NY -- Two college students face seven years in prison for planting art on New York City subways that police say looked like bombs.
Robert Barrett and Jamie Davis -- both 21 and juniors at the Pratt Institute, one of the leading art schools in the United States -- stuffed a cardboard tube and four bags with newspapers and comic strips on Sept. 28, police said.
They labeled each package with the transit authority's "If you see something, say something" campaign, which urges people to report suspicious packages, and included the program's toll-free number, The New York Times reported Saturday.
The students then photographed the packages after they put them on subway cars and in subway stations.
The students, enrolled in a sculpture class that includes an assignment to create a site-specific installation, apologized for the incident.
A Pratt spokeswoman said the art teacher warned against the students' project when she heard about it.
Besides facing jail time if convicted, Barrett and Davis may be suspended or expelled, the spokeswoman said.
