Fall Camp Position Battles - Defensive End

This is not a knock on Dzuris but I could see either Davis or King replacing him in the starting lineup by seasons end if they wind up being the pass rushers they have the potential to be
Yeah, here I go hating on walk-ons again but Dzuris is a nice player but definitely not a game-changer. Would have to agree that he is replaceable.

Although if we continue to rotate on the defensive line as much as we did last year, it probably doesn't matter a whole lot who starts. And I'm a fan of that, fwiw.

I was listening to Sipple's radio show on the Ticket and was surprised to hear that Dzuris lead the team in TFLs last year at 9. May not be that RG type, but I think he gets undersold too much.

Eh, I'd say that had more to do with quantity of opportunities rather than great play. He was healthy and played basically the whole year, iirc. Freedom led the team in sacks despite missing at least a couple games and playing hurt most of the second half of the year. And apparently we didn't blitz our linebackers much because we couldn't figure out how to run the blitz packages.

Yes, but I also think it is a bit of an indictment on the D last year overall. In 2014 there were 4 players at 9 TFLs or higher, highest was Maliek at 14. In 2013 there were 3 players with 9 TFLs or higher, RG was the best at 19!

Who can help: Two seniors respected for their work ethic and motor — defensive end Ross Dzuris and tackle Kevin Maurice — will anchor the line. Maurice needs to stay healthy, as does Freedom Akinmoladun, the presumptive starting end opposite Dzuris. Akinmoladun needs to be more consistent, but he’s a pretty good pass rusher for a still-developing guy. Dzuris and Akinmoladun don’t have proven backups, and there are no proven tackles besides Maurice. Carlos and Khalil Davis are precocious twins at tackle, while Mick Stoltenberg is coming off an injury and looking good. At end, don’t count out A.J. Natter and Sedrick King, but redshirt freshmen DaiShon Neal and Alex Davis are on the come.
