Finding the Right Combination on the OLine

Not many starts coming back but quite a few guys who played a lot. I think Lewis has the most starts of anyone on the team - though they were obviously all at Colorado.

The consensus is Lewis and Cotton have the left side locked down. The battle will be for the other three spots and backups - who will likely get a lot of work.

Givens Price working at Tackle this fall after spending most of the spring at Guard.

I really like Lewis and Sterup but I'm not sure the coaches are sold on any backups right now. Might be why Price is getting a look.

Sounds like Kondolo also got a lot of reps with the 1s at RG. Hopefully we have 8-9 guys to rotate as needed.

Beck said the coaches' goal is to get the five best offensive linemen on the field, however possible. He talked about the three starting jobs up for grabs, competitions that will most likely extend throughout this month...

Center: Senior Mark Pelini's the clear leader, Beck said. But the coaches want to keep getting junior Ryne Reeves and sophomore Paul Thurston chances.

Right guard: Junior Chongo Kondolo's made a push recently. And with what senior Mike Moudy's already proven at that spot, it's allowed NU to comfortably move junior Givens Price to tackle.

Right tackle: It appears that Price and junior Zach Sterup are the two guys getting the most reps at this position. But junior Matt Finnin is in the mix, Beck said. The coaches are experimenting a bit, moving guys around as much as they can -- because after the starting lineup is settled, they'd like to make sure they have a tackle who can play on both the right and left sides.

I like the idea of the 5 "best" - but how often do we hear "he's a natural guard playing tackle" - yada yada yada. I guess if he's still better than that tackle, play him - but I wonder what it does for the development of that "natural guard". And do we move our clear #1 guard to tackle where he isn't as effective? tough decisions on this one. six of one, half dozen of the other I guess.

Ok so I'm going to vent a little here.

Why are we micromanaging the football forum?. Making a seperate thread for every position group is cluttering up the board and making everything hard to follow. Don't understand why we can't keep everything in one thread like we had the last few years. You click on the link and it takes you right where you left off. Instead I have to open 10 threads.

Not everyone has all day to look at stuff. The board is cluttered and hard to follow this fall. Jmo.

Edit got a good answer. Thanks Mav

Alex Lewis wasn't at practice today - no reason that I've seen - and David Knevel got a lot of the first-team reps.
