COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Air Force Academy is looking into comments made by longtime football coach Fisher DeBerry, who said black athletes "run very, very well" and that the program lacks minority athletes.

The 67-year-old DeBerry, in his 22nd year at Air Force, first mentioned the academy's lack of minority players compared to other schools on Monday.

"We were looking at things, like you don't see many minority athletes in our program," DeBerry was quoted as saying in The Gazette of Colorado Springs.

DeBerry elaborated on his comments during his weekly luncheon Tuesday.

"It just seems to be that way, that Afro-American kids can run very, very well. That doesn't mean that Caucasian kids and other descents can't run, but it's very obvious to me they run extremely well," DeBerry said in remarks broadcast Tuesday night by Denver television station KWGN.

Academy officials released a statement Tuesday, saying they were aware of the remarks.

"We cannot comment further until we have a chance to review all the reports, the coach's actual statements and to speak with the coach personally," academy spokesman Lt. Col Laurent Fox said.

DeBerry is the winningest coach in service academy history with a record of 161-94-1. He has had 17 winning seasons and won 12 bowl games.

This season, the Falcons are struggling. The team lost 48-10 to No. 20 TCU on Saturday, dropping to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the Mountain West Conference.
Is he wrong by saying this? Is it not the truth? Most of the skill positions on a team are filled with black players. Does anyone have the numbers to the % of D1 football players that are black? I don't think he meant any disrespect by saying this, this was just his observation.

I guess its better than saying that black athletes ARE NOT welcome at Air Force

The way I see it is you take the best student-athletes with the best character who are the best fit for your program, no matter what their ethnicity is. If they happen to be black, white, Hispanic, Asian, European, Australian, etc, what does it matter?

People need to not be so hung up on race, cant we all just get along :cheers

Yep the guy used tact when saying what he meant. I agree the media is just trying to stir up some more racial bull sh#t!

ESPN did make a good point. There has been no white RB or CB taken in the first round of the draft since 96 or something to that effect. Also PTI made some good points in favor of the AF coach!

I think people s/b able to feel free to state the obvious w/o fearing for the demise of their professional life and destruction of their credibility because of a panicky media that loves to distort Christianity and ethnicity issues.

There are what, 250M US citizens? Maybe 50M are African American?

Yet, 80% of all skill players in D1 football are African American. I don't understand what the media is freaking out about.

Fisher DeBerry was dead wrong. And, whether he realizes it or not, his comments are damaging.

The media is jumping all over this guy. I just don't get it anymore. Society has gone to hell in a handbag. Pretty soon we will be too politically correct for our own good.
