I am home in Lincoln for the holidays. I went up to the loft above the garage yesterday to retrieve the x-mas decorations and lights to put up around the house.

Being a service member, we travel/move quite a bit. I had used some old newspapers from the North County Times (San Diego) in 2000 to pack the lights in.

I looked at my wife as I pulled out the newspapers from around the lights and remarked, "sure does bring back memories."

I didn't think much about it until this morning though. I returned to the paper laying in the box and, out of curiosity, I started flipping through the sports section.

On page C-7 there it was. It's rout 66 as Nebraska rolls.

San Antonio- The Nebraska Cornhuskers claimed they weren't mad about being left out of the Bowl Championship Series.

Yeah, right.

No.9 Nebraska ended a disappointing season by setting a bowl record for points in a 66-17 victory of No.18 Northwestern in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday night.

"We would have liked to be in a BCS game, but we put ourselves in this position," said Matt Davidson, who had two touchdown catches. "Hopefully, with an overpowering football game like thiswe can leave our legacy."

The Cornhuskers (10-2) broke the bowl record set by Texas A&M in a 65-14 victory over Bringham Young in the 1990 Holiday Bowl. Nebraska's previous bowl high came in a 62-24 victory over Florida in the 1996 Fiesta Bowl.

"Finishing 10-2 is a great record. This is a great football team and hopefully everyone can see that," Davidson said.

Dan Alexander ran for 240 yards and two touchdowns and Eric Crouch ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more scores for Nebraska, which shut out Northwestern (8-4) in the second half.

After falling behind 10-7 early in the first quarter, the Huskers outscored Northwestern 59-7 the rest of the way.

Nebraska coach Frank Solich, hoping to finish with a Top 5 ranking, didn't pull his starters until about 10 minutes were left with Nebraska leading 59-17.

A 10-2 team being left out of the BCS has a lot more to be upset about than does a 7-4 team.

Perhaps it is best said by a NEBRASKA player, Matt Davidson:

"We would have liked to be in a BCS game, but we put ourselves in this position."

Cry me a river, Michigan.

Merry Christmas to my fellow Husker Fans! GBR!

That was a pretty good Northwestern team we thumped that year. IIRC, they had Zac Kustok and Damian Anderson that year running wild on folks in the Big 10.

I can remember my friend who walked-on that year to Nebraska (his only year here) and he told me he had never seen a team dominated like Northwestern was that game.

Sad game to look back on, as it was one of the last were we just physically outmatched our opponents ten fold.
