Florida hoops star leaning towards NU

Interesting that someone being recruited by the likes of Florida, OSU & USC is considering NU for hoops. Barry must be doing something right, b/c it suddenly seems like more so-called blue-chips are giving us looks than ever before. The caveat is that he sounds as if he's just looking for a 1-year audition for the NBA, and feels NU could be the peferct fit for that -- big stage in the Big 12, immediate impact player, possibly star of team etc. What do you guys think, is it worth it to burn a schollie and recruiting energy on a guy who is all but certainly leaving after one year?

DAYTONA BEACH -- Keith Brumbaugh's NBA dreams are now on hold.
The former DeLand basketball player -- Mr. Basketball in Florida this year -- backed out of the NBA draft before Tuesday's 5 p.m. deadline, and will now concentrate on selecting a college to attend
"Right now, there are four schools interested in him that I know of. And I think he might be leaning toward Nebraska. They just came onto the scene recently. I think in the next couple of weeks, he'll have a decision."
BRUMBAUGH'S COLLEGE POSSIBILITIES
Florida

Strengths: Getting to play in-state, and play for a perennial NCAA Tournament team. . . . Getting to play in a run-and-gun system to display his individual skills.

Weaknesses: Not many.

The skinny: The Gators had two underclassmen, Matt Walsh and Anthony Roberson, declare for the NBA Draft -- leaving holes to fill. Brumbaugh, Florida's Mr. Basketball, would be a gem if the Gators have the space available.

Nebraska

Strengths: Because of a lack of tradition within the Cornhuskers basketball program, Brumbaugh could be an instant star at Nebraska -- enhancing his chance to be a draft pick next spring . . . Like Oklahoma State, he'd have a chance to play in one of the top conferences in the nation.

Weaknesses: Distance from home. . . . Team may not make it to the NCAA Tournament,

which is a big showcase for future professional talent.

The skinny: The Cornhuskers are a recent addition to Brumbaugh's list. According to DeLand coach John Zeoli, they are one of Brumbaugh's favorites.

Oklahoma State

Strengths: An established competitor within the Big 12 conference . . . John Lucas, the former NBA coach who has trained Brumbaugh the past two months, had a son, John Lucas, Jr., playing for the school in recent years.

Weaknesses: Distance from home . . . Might have to "wait his turn" more than at other schools.

The skinny: If Brumbaugh played for the Cowboys, he'd get a chance to work with one of the top coaches in the college game in Eddie Sutton -- and he'd get to play against high-profile coaches such as Texas Tech's Bobby Knight and top programs like Kansas.

Southern Cal

Strengths: The tradition at Southern Cal is one of the best in college athletics.

Weaknesses: Really, really far from home.

The skinny: Brumbaugh has all but eliminated the Trojans from contention, according to Zeoli. They had emerged as a possibility in recent months, and Brumbaugh mentioned them at a May 20 press conference.

South Florida

Strengths: Getting to play in-state . . . Like Nebraska, Brumbaugh would be the big guy on campus, almost instantly, allowing him to showcase his talent and make him a possible draft pick as early as next year.

Weaknesses: Not as much national exposure as the other schools on his list.

The skinny: The Bulls are also a recent addition to Brumbaugh's list. The DeLand native has said for months that he'd like to stay in-state if he goes to college.

Oh, yeah, you go after a kid like this - particularly if you're Nebraska. He gives the program instant credibility in the eyes of other blue-chippers. Every kid comes in dreaming of the NBA and leaving early. The few upon which programs are build inevitably leave after one or two years. It's a fact of life now, and something coaches plan around.

If this dude comes to NU even for one year that would be huge. Would he be the biggest recruit in NU basketball history? He is one of the Top 15 players in the nation. Hopefully Barry would open up the offense with him, instead of just throwing him in the high post with that stupid Princeton offense.

Wow...I knew Collier could recruit (since he had his handcuffs removed, and can start recruiting talent now), but this would be HUGE! Hope he comes!

I don't disagree that this guy would be a huge addition to the basketball team, but he has said all along that he would like to stay in-state and he has South Florida as a favorite along with Nebraska. South Florida is in the Conference USA which is a strong basketball conference like the Big 12. So I see the value this kid could add, but I don't see him coming to Nebraska. It'd be great if he does though!

You gotta bring him in. The only good show IN the Devaney center is Womens Gymnastics! Even the concerts suck!!!

plus Season TIX are so cheap...especially for students.. 25 bones for the whole season! Oh! if they'd do that for baseball.......

It would be so sweet if he would come. We are out of scholorships though arent we?

Sounds like they're gonna find a way to make it work. I don't know how.

Also, believing anything Channel 8 Eyewitness news reports is like believing a K-State clown, no reliability. I can't wait to see how this turns out.
