Former Husker Stewart Joins Big 12 Staff

Big 12 Conference Commissioner Kevin Weiberg announces the hiring of Ed Stewart as Assistant Commissioner for Football and Student Services.

Stewart joins the Big 12 Conference staff after spending seven years at the University of Missouri, where he elevated to Associate Director of Athletics for Administration.

“I am delighted that we have been able to attract Ed to this position,” said Weiberg. “He brings several outstanding attributes to the job, including direct experience in student-athlete services at both Missouri and Michigan State. He has advanced as an administrator in a good organization at Missouri where Mike Alden hires high-quality individuals, giving them an opportunity to grow and improve. In addition, Ed was an outstanding student-athlete who achieved at the highest level on the field during his playing days at Nebraska. He possesses first-rate leadership skills, emblematic of a person that served as captain of a national championship football team. Ed knows the game of football and will do a good job working with our coaches. I am very pleased to add him to our team.”

“I am excited to join Commissioner Weiberg and the talented Big 12 staff,” commented Stewart. “I look forward to aiding the conference in its continued drive for excellence in the classroom, community and fields of competition.”

Stewart joined the MU staff in 1999 as Director of Life Skills before moving into senior management posts as Assistant Director of Athletics for Student Services in 2000, and Assistant Director of Athletics for Administration in ’01. In his existing position at Missouri, Stewart oversaw football scheduling and travel, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s golf, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, video services and equipment operations.

A native of Chicago, Ill., and a 1994 graduate of the University of Nebraska, Stewart will have sport management responsibilities with football, serve as the primary liaison to the Conference’s directors of student-athlete services, assist in supporting the Prentice Gautt Student-Athlete Welfare Committee and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, manage Conference programs in gambling prevention and diversity initiatives, and carry out other duties as assigned.

A former Big Eight Conference Defensive Player of the Year and consensus All-America in 1994, Stewart was also a Butkus finalist that season, helping Nebraska to a national championship. In his senior season, Stewart finished with 96 tackles and 18 quarterback hurries. Stewart went on to play two years of professional football. In 2000 he was named to the Nebraska Football All-Century team and in ‘04 was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame.

Stewart entered athletic administration at Michigan State where he spent two years as an academic counselor prior to joining the Missouri staff. While at MSU, he earned a master’s degree in Adult and Continuing Education in 2000.
