Former Husker Todd Peat Jr. slams signing day hype

He's not wrong about the best players not always playing. Even though that was Bo's message coming in. Alot of walk on's that are better and EARNING IT are getting passed up because of some certain coaches disdain for walk ons. Maybe not Bo, but otherwise.

Either way, I don't support Peat, but he brought up a point that I am wanted to expand on a little.

I just listened to Tom Lemming on CBSSporst Radio and he basically said that a lot of these kids are trying to build their brand and make a name and that is why the Signing Day has become so big. He said that no one forces these kids to do it and often times it's the kids' families that are calling TV stations trying to get airtime.

I just read through all of his tweets on this subject. He's spot-on about the hype and the advice these kids should have, but I don't get his throwing Bo under the bus. I don't think that was the main thrust of his point, and I don't get the impression he took to twitter yesterday to gripe at Bo. It just came up.

Here's the full tweet soapbox thing in order:

@toddpeatjr 21h

3 years ago today, I crashed Fox sports website and I still ain't sh#t.

@toddpeatjr 21h

The best advice I could give to young men signing today is; HUMBLE YOURSELF before the world does.

@toddpeatjr 21h

Humble yourselves before the system of college football does.

@toddpeatjr 21h

I crashed Fox sports website on signing day. Like that really happened. I thought I was Jay-Z. That goes to the head of an 18 year-old boy.

@toddpeatjr 21h

I hate all this signing day hype.it's bad for the kids.

‏@toddpeatjr 21h

I'll see y'all in the NFL

@toddpeatjr 21h

Doing it for free is old to me.

@toddpeatjr 21h

The SYSTEM

@toddpeatjr 21h

Having said all that I would not mind a phone call today from one of these schools cause I need a job.

@toddpeatjr 21h

What a lot of y'all young boys signing today don't realize is the best players don't always play. It's a system.

Former #Husker @toddpeatjr speaking some tough truth -- about himself, about the recruiting hype -- right now.

@toddpeatjr 21h

"@Prmader22: @toddpeatjr Don't you think some of them bring that hype on themselves? #hatgame"no. They are expected/pressured to by media.

@toddpeatjr 21h

Pressure put on the kids by the media is sickening. The pressure to do an announcement pressure to stay relevant pressure to build your hype

@toddpeatjr 21h

Shoutout to all the players going juco too. Your road will be much harder than most. Y'all deserve more credit.

@toddpeatjr 20h

@Prmader22 its the culture of the recruiting process. It's keeping up with the Jones. If every other unsigned 4 star is gonna have one u r 2

@toddpeatjr 20h

Signing day is all fun and games to you media people and fans, but these young men are making life decisions. That isn't stressed enough.

#NothingGiven

@toddpeatjr 20h

Do it for yourself. Not your future teammates not your future coaches not the fans. Because when you fall off, they'll forget all about you.

@toddpeatjr 20h

Another word of advice, make your decision with your head, not your heart, you may think these coaches care about you but they don't.

@toddpeatjr 20h

I haven't heard a word from anybody at Nebraska since I left. About anything. Take heed.

@toddpeatjr 20h

This isn't venting, this is something the kids need to hear.

@toddpeatjr 19h

@Skurlover Ask Bo Pelini if he knows what Todd Peat is doing with his life.

@toddpeatjr 19h

@Phead27 You're confused. I'm trying to tell these kids things nobody else will. I wish someone told me.

@toddpeatjr 19h

Don't be fooled. If the college players that follow me had the freedom I do on Twitter a lot of them would tell you the same.

@toddpeatjr 19h

When I was let go by Nebraska, it was over the phone by a football personnel guy, not in person by a head coach.

@toddpeatjr Not all 4 stars become stars many don't pan out, do to charecter issues, work ethic, injury etc....

@toddpeatjr 18h

The moral of the story is; College football is a business, not a game, so today, young men, make business decisions.

@toddpeatjr 18h

Got y'all shook up. Lol

@toddpeatjr 18h

Nebraska has the best fans in the world.

@toddpeatjr 18h

Bring the real to the people.

@toddpeatjr 18h

If what I said today offended you, it wasn't for you.

@toddpeatjr 18h

I do not blame Nebraska, Bo Pelini, or anybody but myself for my lack of success. I just want to bring light to some important issues.

@toddpeatjr 17h

Wish these kids could see my mentions too

@toddpeatjr 17h

Be thankful for what you have. It can be taken away in an instant.

What @toddpeatjr did on Twitter today might be the truest/most necessary thing to happen on Twitter on a day like this. Thankful he did it.

@toddpeatjr 17h

I'm not sorry if I offend you, all I know how to do is keep it real, if you don't feel me, you don't feel me. #RealRecognizeReal

@toddpeatjr 17h

Don't let anyone tell you what or who you are or aren't. Good or bad. Only you know that.

@toddpeatjr 17h

I know my worth. Don't need nobody to tell me.

@toddpeatjr 17h

@toddpeatjr While I don't doubt you're speaking the truth, you are speaking about a side that people don't want to talk/know about.

It tailed off a bit at the end there and I selectively posted some of the last few. It's all there if you want to read the whole thing.

He makes some really great points, but like a young man, he makes some blunders, too. One is to presume that because people haven't gone through this process they don't know what he's talking about and can't comment. Most people 30 or older have made some pretty damned difficult life decisions, and some mistakes that will affect them for the rest of their lives, so while it may not be identical, most everyone can relate to the decisions he's talking about. The stage is different, that's all.

Maybe someone knows this because I don't - is it OK per NCAA rules for Bo or the NU coaches to continue to interact with TPJr after he leaves Nebraska? I'm not sure what the rules pertaining to recruiting would say about that. Maybe they can and just haven't. I'm pretty certain the NU coaching staff can't respond to him about this - pretty sure that would be a violation of some sort, like Bo can't talk directly about recruits until they sign their LOI, stuff like that.

One thing I am certain of - Bo Pelini knows WAY more than Todd Peat Jr. what the pressures of this industry entail. Peat Jr. has to worry about Peat Jr. right now. Bo has children in school, ties to the community, a wife, a house, bills and stuff that Peat Jr. doesn't have. If anyone knows that they should, "Be thankful for what you have. It can be taken away in an instant." it's a college football coach. Bo was an inch away from being fired this year. Nobody has to preach to him about that.

Well Knapp, it appears he's currently enrolled and playing for someone, so I'm 96.46% sure that it would be a rather significant violation for Bo to contact him, regardless of reason. But I might be wrong.

From what I get out of the situation, Peat was lazy. Sorry, I won't be one to feel sorry for you getting let go if you aren't going to put in effort.

Not only that, Bo has over 100 other football players currently in the program that he is ultimately responsible for. I'm not surprised that Bo doesn't keep in touch with every player that leaves the program especially when that player didn't care enough to do what the staff was telling him to do when he was here.

Todd is clearly frustrated and venting, but I think the target is wrong. He does take some responsibility but his college career clearly has not turned out as planned. His younger brother is doing well from what I've heard, and the youngest brother is creating quite a buzz in his high school career. He makes some good points that I completely agree with about signing day though. I watched some of it yesterday, and it was such a circus. The kids come across in a pretty bad light with the whole "hat ceremony" piece. Makes me respect those who sign earlier even more.

If Peat didn't care about becoming a better player, then it's hard to sympathize when the coaching staff doesn't put much effort in to him after he was gone. Kind of a two-way street there bud

I don't buy into the media blame game. He was an 18 year old kid and wanted the attention. That is on him. Kids like Tanner Farmer didn't want/need it and he did just fine in the recruiting "business." Peat sounds like he was young/talented and loved the attention, and now that he didn't pan out, he wants to shift some of the blame to the media.

Really? Do you have some sort of inside information that this is the case or is this just your opinion.

He can have contact, he wouldn't be "recruiting" him. Would Barney have been forced to quit talking to his son if Nebraska hadn't signed them and they went to Iowa? Not at all. Coaches are in contact with players outside their program all the time.

i look at it as a cautionary tale. he did love the attention. he got wrapped up in it, lost focus, failed. i think he is warning others that you need to be careful with the hype. you love it now, but all the glitters is not gold. he was crushed by the attention because he was not personally prepared for it. that is on him, but no reason in not trying to warn other kids to be careful with the hype.

I know what I know from who I get to know it from. This is about the extent I've ever talked about it. Not willing to expand much more. Wish I could, but I can't at this time.

You can go ahead and dismiss me now ...
