game with SJS Spartans

Walk-on
Hello all. I'm a Spartan fan with Nebraska ties. My dad lives in Alma and was born in Ainsworth. My wife's family is all from Nebraska with an uncle living in Lincoln. He's a season ticket holder with a big red N on his front door. With that being said I was wondering if there has been any talk about this year's game with San Jose State of the WAC? I subscribe to all the Spartan forums and am a season ticket holder so I know what our fans are saying and what kind of season the Spartans might have. BUT, the Huskers have had a tumultuous last few years under Callahan (we don't care for him out here and Raider fans hate him) so we don't know what to think. Mostly Spartan fans feel about 90% no chance to 10% a chance to win. Nobody is overly confident. I'm one of the 10% and here's why:

Our recruiting class was the lowest rated in the WAC. ??? Our best newcomers are transfers from other D! programs. Jeff Schweiger is a DE that returns to the San Jose area from USC where he started as a freshman but regressed and transfered. One of the highest rated linemen ever to come out of the San Jose area. Coye Francies is a CB from Oregon State. A shutdown corner that will replace our AA Dwight Lowery. Kyle Reed is a freshman QB from Cal who is projected to be a starter but who knows; he IS a freshman. He is in the mold of the Dixon kid from Oregon which is something we haven't had in years. Most of SJS's QBs have been in a prototypical pro mode such as Jeff Garcia. Another newcomer and at the top of the list of our true recruits is a juco WR Avery who is 6'4" and about 200.

So those are the new guys worth mentioning. Returning from last year? Many running backs but none to speak of which is worry number two. Number one is QB. The freshman I've mentioned but we have a few other returners who saw little time last year. Line? Very young last year but a year under the belt with some injured upperclassmen returning. Could be a strength. Receivers. I've mentioned Avery. That gives the Spartans two big wideouts with the best receiver being a little white guy no one can cover; Kevin Jurovich (not fast but always open). That position gets an A but will they have a QB to get it to them, a line to protect, and a running game to keep things honest on your side? Hmm. Too many question marks on the offense.

Defense. The D line could be one of the strongest we have had in years with the addition of Schweiger. Past two years = no pass rush. That will change. Youth here too, but they're good but not overly large. Linebackers? The two best are gone but we return one gem in Ryno Gonzalez (don't you love that name?) and a juco transfer to fill the middle and one somewhere already on the team to step up. Could be at least fair. Defensive backs are good. Chris Owens and Coye Francies might be the best in the WAC if not the west. Safeties are good and strong so that is the strong side of the defense.

So, what might we, as Spartan fans, expect when 12 of us show up in September? I'm planning on a pizza at Valentino's after the game. Is that still done?

Welcome to the board! You can get Valentino's pizza during the game too.

Expectations are enormously high in Huskerland (as always). Most expect the offense to be effective since it played well last year and the OC was retained by Pelini. We expect to get a much heavier dose of power running though. The major players on O are the QB Joey Ganz, IB Marlon Lucky, and the oline. Ganz, fifth year senior, was the backup most of last season but started the last 3 games after the starter went down with injury. He's a gutsy scrambler:

Ganz, Joe 163.38 89-152-7 58.6 1435 16

Lucky, senior, was a highly regarded HS player who led the team in both rushing and receiving:

Lucky, Marlon rushing: 206-1019 4.9 receiving: 75-705 9.4

The oline has been developing reasonably well the last few years and has a lot of talent and experience heading into 2008.

The defense was absolutely abysmal last year. It was the most points ever given up and the fewest turnovers ever created. I believe the total D was ranked #116 in division 1A. However, Pelini is known for his defensive prowess so we'll see how that translates next fall. Most Husker fans believe a repeat of 2003 when Pelini was the DC will happen again: NU went from #56 to #11 in total defense from 2002-2003.

As far as SJS go, Im somewhat of a fan of them. Namely because of their offense and your qb from last year (saw him play in the Texas vs The Nation game-played amazingly). Although I see SJS probably getting better this year and in upsoming ones, I wont give them much of a chance to win. We have tons of experience for our o-line, veteran rbs, and a qb who can move the ball. We may lack wr experience but Nate Swift I believe will be the senior leader. On defense the only places we lost big was in the lb position. Im not worried, weve had people qualified to play there for a while and Callahan had ppl out of place. Final score: 48-13 Huskers. But it will be a good game. :)

Nothing against the SJS Spartans, but I am ready to see NU physically pound and dominate the lesser D-1 programs again. :bonez

48-13 is not the final of a good game..... final score of a good time watching an absolutely silly blowout maybe.....

I ain't makin any predictions..... <_<

I doubt that 90% of SJS fans are predicting an automatic loss.

If there's anything I learned from last season...it's that EVERY team needs to be prepared, and not take the opposing team lightly.

Personally, I would be very upset if we lost to San Jose State. But, it's the offseason, and I really have no idea what we Nebraska fans will see.

I'm guessing, a remarkably improved defense (that isn't saying much), and a very similar offense.

If Joe Ganz continues anything close to his success in the last 4 games, and our defense improves...I'd say, "Watch out." And Nebraska WILL contend for the North.

From one 5-7 team to another...I'd say, we have nothing else but to be positive. I'm a downer.

I am a fan of the WAC, just don't see the need for us to play any of their teams, would much rather see a Top 25 team coming in to Lincoln, and if we really are going to go for a NC, we have to stop scheduling weaker schools.

Even with our dismal year last year, Nebraska would have to be favored to win this game easily, with the change in coaches that we have had, and what we did last year on offense. The WAC's great thing is they can score, and put the ball in the air a lot. It should be a good test for the defense, to see where we are at.

I think most Huskers fans are like me in that we really have no idea what to expect next year. Many of us (myself included) had VERY high expectation for last year and as a result...well let's just say I'll be taking a "wait and see" attitude.

I do expect that your offense will be capable. I'm a little worried about the way our apparent starter at QB for this upcoming season (Joe Ganz) had a tendency to "get loose with the ball" at times. A lot of that may have been that he was simply trying to win games where we had absolutely NO defense what so ever. As for the defense, I, for one, am optimistic. We certainly can't be any worse than we were last year. We do have a lot of questions to answer on that side of the ball however. Our entire "backend" won't have a lot of experience next year. That said, I do expect that Pelini will have them flying to the ball.

GBR!!

:yeah

I agree with everything you say...my only "beef" with this game is the same one I have had for years with all the NCAA upper echelon teams, they don't schedule each other, and as a result have to play teams beneath what on paper they should be playing...but, with the reductions in scholarships those teams have competed better and better, so in a way they can scare you too.

With what took place last season with everyone losing, and with the competition for points in the polls, I think this will take care of itself over time. I also realize that this game was scheduled a couple years ago. If you are a SJS fan, it is great...and I am really happy for you, because you will get to see your favorite teams play each other, but as far as competing for a NC, it is a hard game to defend if you play SJS and beat them, but don't run the score up on them, and if you lose, you can pretty much say your bid for the NC is definitely over, where as if you played a Michigan or Florida State, you might still have a shot at it if everyone else loses or had a weak schedule.

The game is scheduled, and we will play it...hopefully it won't be our waterloo.

After last season, a win alone is a good game. Besides, first game of the Bo Era. No mater what the score is it still should be considered a "good game."
