International Man of Mystery
Change has begun quickly within the Kansas football program.
Sources told The Star that KU’s assistant coaches were asked to pack up their offices on Tuesday, a day after Turner Gill officially took over as head coach. Wide-receivers coach David Beaty, a key to the Jayhawks’ recruiting efforts in Texas, is the only assistant who is being considered as a potential member of Gill’s staff.
Sources also said that KU’s strength and conditioning staff, led by director of strength and conditioning Chris Dawson, will not be retained under Gill.
Gill will be parting ways with some successful assistants for Kansas. Offensive coordinator Ed Warinner was a finalist for the American Football Coaches Association’s top assistant this season. In his three years running the KU offense, the Jayhawks put up the top three total yardage seasons in school history. Defensive coordinator Clint Bowen, a former KU safety, rose all the way from graduate assistant in 1998 to running the defense the last two seasons.
Offensive-line coach John Reagan, co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Bill Miller, tight-ends coach/recruiting coordinator Brandon Blaney, cornerbacks coach Je’Ney Jackson, running backs/special teams coach Louie Matsakis and defensive-line coach Tom Sims spent a combined 25 seasons at KU. Dawson spent seven years at KU.
