Helu named to Doak Walker list

Nebraska running back Roy Helu was one of 45 running backs put on the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award, annually given to the nation's top running back.

 

Helu averaged 6.4 yards per carry last year and gained 803 yards. He scored seven touchdowns in part-time duty, as well.

 

Six other running backs from the Big 12 were named to the list. Since its inception in 1990, no Nebraska ball-carrier has ever won the Doak Walker Award. NU's last finalist for the award was Ahman Green in 1997.

Despite my bias, it's a joke that Mizzou's Derrick Washington is not on that list. 1000+ yards and 17 TD's - with torn knee cartilage most of the season.... but they include Cyrus Gray from Texas A&M (I had to look him up) who rushed for all of 363 yards.

I can't stand Mizzou, but that ain't right.

 
it is a joke that washington isn't on there when they have about half of the starting running backs in d1 on the list. i'm biased but helu has the chance to be truly great in the next year or two. i believe we recruited gray pretty hard but how he's on the list and washington isn't is stupid.

I agree (especially the inclusion of Gray), but I would imagine it's a side effect of most national media only knowing Maclin and Daniel, and to a lesser extent, Coffman and Moore.

 
I can see why people aren't expecting much from Derrick Washington. Last year's numbers were the product of a dominant offense. Missouri had an experienced quarterback and leader (Daniel), an NFL tight-end (Coffman) and a wide receiver who was a must-watch on every single play (Maclin). With the passing prowess of last year's team, defenses had bigger fish to fry, especially in the middle.

I can't help but think that in '09, Washington becomes the security blanket for the whole offense. Unless Gabbert is all-world right out of the gate, Washington has set himself up for something he may not want in a mediocre offense....lots of attention.

Well find out how good he really is this season.

I agree though, that in favor of a guy like Gray, Washington's numbers should be enough to make the list.

Are you sure you aren't thinking of Jonas Grey in 06? The NU decommit who signing with Notre Lame.
