The 2001 team ended things in a bad way, but also in a familiar way for those who remember a lot of promising Osborne seasons collapse in the last two games against the toughest opponents on the schedule. 2001 sure wasn't my favorite season, but it only became a harbinger in hindsight. Actually thought Solich did a good job getting a modest Husker squad to the NC game, against a Miami team absolutely loaded with NFL talent.
Funny how no one ever talks about the 1999 Huskers. Finished 12 - 1 with wins against 5 Top 20 teams, avenging our only loss by soundly beating Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game, then handling #6 Tennessee with relative ease in the Fiesta Bowl. Ended up ranked #3. Somehow managed to play dominant football while leading the NCAA in fumbles.
Gotta agree there's no assessment on the 2014 Huskers until they finish the next three games, and I won't hazard a bet on any of them. That would still leave a CCG and a Bowl Game to be played, but at least we'd have a sense of progress -- or not -- by then.
Gut feeling is this team is a few ticks better than last year, and if the defense isn't a mirage it could end up the best of the Pelini era.
You heard me. This team has the potential to lose less than four games.
