How do the 2014 Huskers compare to past Husker teams?

Where would you place this year's Husker team among the past Husker teams listed in the post bel

  • Below the 1995 Huskers but as good as the 2001 Huskers

14-1: This would be winning the national title, which would of course make this among the greatest seasons in Nebraska football history, and the best since 1997, although obviously the worst of the national title seasons since we have a loss in it, but I doubt anyone would complain about that. Honestly, I'd say this is only slightly more likely than 8-5. But still pretty unlikely.

This thread fails on the premise 2001 was good.
We had one game where our defense could not figure out how to stop a RB from utilizing a cut back move at the LOS. Despite that, we were actually in the game until the end where we were down by only 12. 11-2 is not even acceptable by your standards... Why do you even bother following any team?

Agree, that 2009 team is 9-0 right now...and there isn't a thread about being scared of Wisconsin that's for damn sure.

Lost to Iowa State at home, but would beat MSU on road? Hmmm ...
haha - you remember that game? Never seen anything like it. try not to think about it ever.

But yes, I think they'd beat MSU on the road. I don't think MSU gets to 27. Lippet gets locked down by Amukamara, something Mitchel obviously couldn't do. And I think, as craptastic as that offense was - it would have ground out yards and won the turnover battle by a +2 margin. Final score: 23-17 Nebraska, with Henery connecting on 3 field goals, and a defensive score.

Haha, this is true.

Not to get into a twist over this, but you're kind of glossing over how the season that year finished, maybe?

Not saying it wasn't our best team in the last few, but in the annals of history, that squad will be remembered as a harbinger of what lay ahead then a high water mark.

No glossing on my part...perhaps only concentrating on the negative on your part. You are after all really good at being a wet blanket.

Ok, have it your way. I'm not getting into this.

The 2001 team ended things in a bad way, but also in a familiar way for those who remember a lot of promising Osborne seasons collapse in the last two games against the toughest opponents on the schedule. 2001 sure wasn't my favorite season, but it only became a harbinger in hindsight. Actually thought Solich did a good job getting a modest Husker squad to the NC game, against a Miami team absolutely loaded with NFL talent.

Funny how no one ever talks about the 1999 Huskers. Finished 12 - 1 with wins against 5 Top 20 teams, avenging our only loss by soundly beating Texas in the Big 12 Championship Game, then handling #6 Tennessee with relative ease in the Fiesta Bowl. Ended up ranked #3. Somehow managed to play dominant football while leading the NCAA in fumbles.

Gotta agree there's no assessment on the 2014 Huskers until they finish the next three games, and I won't hazard a bet on any of them. That would still leave a CCG and a Bowl Game to be played, but at least we'd have a sense of progress -- or not -- by then.

Gut feeling is this team is a few ticks better than last year, and if the defense isn't a mirage it could end up the best of the Pelini era.

You heard me. This team has the potential to lose less than four games.

That '99 team was Frank's best. Great offensive line. And Alexander and Buckhalter at I back. Alexander had great speed, but you're right.....he coughed the ball up a bit.

The 1999 squad was one of my favorite NU teams ever. I still say they deserved a chance to okay for #1. In the current system, they might have won.

A lot is forgotten about that black friday as well that that game was actually closer than what it seems looking back. Fumble on the one yard line away from that thing being 42-37 going to the fourth. It was 35-3 at one point, and 42-16, yet that one sh#t play early in the 3rd. The fumble on the one that woulda made it 42-30, and Nebraska scored again after that anyway. Obviously it went back to sh#t in the 4th, but yeah. Once it was 35-3, Nebraska stopped CU on 6 of its next 7 possessions.

It's weird this is being talked about. The other night i posted the youtube link to this game with the comment "never forget". More of a trolling joke, only because I had just taken part in an intriging discussion about these very thoughts of mine about that game.
