How do you make "destroyed"-type backgrounds?

I have always wondered how people do these in Photoshop. Similar to the backgrounds that borNred, among others, has used in various sigs. Is there a certain filter you're using, or just going crazy with different brushes?

You can find a sweet background and work from there or you can download brushes onto your photoshop to create your own.

It's all brushes or stock images.

Usually I start with a solid black or red (occasionally white) background, and use Fractal brushes, grunge brushes, etc
