Husker Road Games

Three-Star Recruit
I would love to hear about some of the games you all have attended on the road. I think we all know how great game day is in Lincoln but I am curious about experiences in "enemy" territory. I'll share a few of mine:

1994 Orange Bowl - FSU 18, NU 16

Drove 24 hours from Chicago to the game, anticipating a lot of fun but not too confident the Huskers could hang as "17 1/2 point underdogs". The Orange Bowl is in a word Amazing. If you ever get the chance you have to go to a game there. The drive down was interesting in that Penn State fans were on their way to the Gator Bowl and had their cars decked out, amazing how many made that trip. Didn't expect too much in the way of hospitality being a near home game for the Noles but suprisingly their fans were awesome. We played a pick up game with some fans in the parking lot and had my first experience with "Slaw" dogs, good eats. The fans inside were a different story, rowdy and rude, the Huskers shut them up pretty quick. Favorite moment was a hot FSU broad turning to her boyfriend after Trev sacked Ward asking who the heck that guy was. Her boyfriend said oh that's just a 3rd down pass rush guy, lol. Moron. Being at the game we didn't know about the "fumble" or the "clip" until we got home, wow was that a kick in the gut. From our seats we also couldn't see if the final kick was good, just that it had the distance. Worst part of the trip: Nel Carter half time show, talk about a buzz kill.

2002 at Penn State - PSU 40, NU 7

Drove 16 (?) hours from Chicago to Happy Valley. Riding high, thinking the Huskers are just reloaded for the new season. First look in person at the new unis, actually kinda liked em, hate them with a passion in retrospect. The stadium was the best I have ever seen in a college setting. Looked like a NFL stadium. Happy Valley to my surprise did have straight sidelines, contrary to what the refs in 1982 thought, but I digress. A complete and utter disaster in the stands on the field. PSU fans were loud and louder the whole game. Nearly got in a brawl after being shoved by a PSU fan for cheering. Several brawls all around us during the game. Jammal looked lost, the D was pathetic. I watched an NU LB turn to the sidelines with his hands in a "what the hell do I do now" motion right before PSU ran one right by him for a TD. Stayed for the whole thing, regardless of the taunting. Got to our car and had to wait 2 hours to even leave the parking lot. 3 of us pounded a case of Guiness and proceeded to the Gentlemen's club. Got in an accident on the way home......Worst trip ever.

1995(?) at Oklahoma - NU 73, OU 21

Oh man was this sweet. Drove through the night from Chicago to Norman. Arrived at about 5 am, slept in the car until the tailgating started. Partied with some pretty humbled OU fans. Met Brian Bozworth on the streets, who apparently is still a god there. OU gets the ball first, their OL seemed to be spread about 2 yards apart from each other (what was Blake thinking?). First play Peter comes crashing through for a sack and the party was on. I remember staring at the scoreboard in disbelief in the second half. Watched OU fans get kicked out of their own stadium for most of the 4th quarter. Stadium was nothing to write home about, we had good end zone seats, but the zones and one sideline go up way too high to be good seats.

1995 @ CU: Neb 44, CU 21

My most memorable was probably in 95 @ sCUm. Ahman took the 1st pitch from Frazier and went the distance to start the game. My favorite Husker play probably ever happened during this game. Frazier had a guy wrapped around him and was about to be tackled for a loss, he just drug the guy a few yards and threw a perfect pass down the sideline by where I was sitting. Since most of the crowd was wearing red, the stadium just erupted.

Everyone always talked about how brutal the CU fans could be, and I wasn't sitting in a Husker section, but there were so many people wearing red and we beat them so bad that they were SILENT! I loved it.

I also watched NU play for the title in Pasadena, but I can never stand watching the Huskers lose. I did enjoy the trip, though.

Two out of the many stick in my mind. In 91 Myself and HANK and some buddies left lincoln to go out to Boulder. While we were on I80 it started snowing pretty bad. It got so bad they ended up shutting down the interstate. We had to drive 40 mph all the way out to that sh#t hole. The day of the game we were suppose to have a shuttle bus take us to the stadium. All these husker fans waiting for the bus not one shows. About 20 uf us gathered in a van to the stadium. It ended up being Pat Tyrence's mom and dad. The game ended in a tie. Go figure.

Again HANC and some buds we drive straight trough to the orange bowl in 97. Against Tenn. While we were driving through Tenn. we decide to get somthing to eat. It was funny the waitor saw us in our husker appeal and asked who we were playing against. :WTH At the pre party the night before the game one of our friends got up on stage and and started to chant in the microphone Go Big Red but it was not turned on. This was right next to Calvin Jones. And after the game HANC and myself were on TV.
