Has the Husker coaching staff ditched the depth chart?

BY BRIAN ROSENTHAL / Lincoln Journal Star

Stewart Bradley sees one every day. He said it hangs on "the defense's wall."

Yes, Nebraska, there is a depth chart, after all.

"It's not like a mystery thing," said Bradley, a junior linebacker on the Nebraska football team.

Many Husker fans would probably argue, but we'll take Bradley's word for it.

A depth chart hasn't been released publicly since before spring practice, when five junior college transfers joined the team.

Even after the Spring Game, there was no update on who stood where. No news entering fall camp. In fact, Nebraska's media guide, for the first time in recent memory, includes no depth chart.

Two weeks before NU's season opener against Maine, many fans and media are still trying to figure out, on their own, which players will fit where.

"It gives them something to talk about," Nebraska offensive coordinator Jay Norvell said. "But until we play games, it doesn't really matter."

This fervor for info is almost akin to people who demand to know what is taking place, in detail, with the war on terror. Both our war and the Huskers' training camp may both be best suited to keeping the enemy from learning much. If they are both more successful, because of the information staying inside, so be it. We will all know results when action commences. In the meantime we can speculate.

What we must be aware of is the journalists telling us what the truth is. They have agendas, fans just want results!

Closing practices to the media and not releasing depth charts???
Does the staff have something to hide????
Like what?
Thats the question
So the question is completely pointless. Alrighty.

Nebraska is hardly the only school with closed practices and like he said, the depth chart doesn't matter in the least until the first game.

If they werent so secretive, then maybe we would know what the scoop is :thumbs

Actually, the depth chart is very important, especially now. When your top guys get the majority of the reps in practice and scrimmages, its important to know who those guys are to get them ready to play. ;)

It's called gameplaning. It's called "why let your opponent know what cards you are bringing to the table". It's called "being ahead of the game"...etc

Surely you know what it means to not release a roster so your opponent doesn't know how to prepare for you. Or are you just trying to stir up something for the sake that someone takes the bait?

Don't worry, the coaches know who is going to play. That's all we need to know

Of course the depth chart is important to the team. If you read the article it says there's one up on the wall every day for the team. It's not important to us until the first game; the team's got it.

Yep, it worked pretty good last year :sarcasm

Formerfan reponse from another thread:

We had 3 All American Cancer players.
You can't gameplan ahead if you have cancer players on the team

I'll borrow this one from Dave, *yawn*

These coaches have demonstrated that they have a tough time gameplanning, even when they have "their guys" who "buy in." These coaches can hardly gameplan at all.

Who cares if the program is being "secretive". Are we as fans disadvantaged or slighted in some way because we can't second guess the coaches for putting so and so at 2nd string left tackle when he's clearly got right guard written all over him?

It's possible that practices have been closed to keep the focus of the team on what they're doing, not who's watching and reporting. If that's the case then I applaud them. Its also possible the depth chart hasn't been released because players are still competing for spots and PT and labeling them 1st string, 2nd string would reduce the competition that keeps them hungry and working hard.

Either way, its not like they're going to stop letting us watch the games or something. Whatever's being done in practice and whatever's being done for/with the press I'm sure the coaches have their reasons for it.
