Huskers look to Nicks at LT

Some quick notes from a Monday interview with Nebraska offensive coordinator Shawn Watson:

-- In the wake of Chris Patrick's announcement that he will enter the NFL Supplemental Draft, Nebraska is looking to senior Carl Nicks to take over the left-tackle position, Watson said.

"Carl developed by the end of last year into a great tackle," Watson said.

Junior Lydon Murtha will be called upon to take over at right tackle. Victory Haines will supply depth at both tackle spots as well as at center, Watson said, and redshirted freshman D.J. Jones also will get a long look at right tackle. It appears Matt Slauson will remain at guard.

-- Watson said repetitions will be distributed equally among the four Husker quarterbacks ready for spring practice: Joe Ganz, Sam Keller, Beau Davis and Patrick Witt.

"It's wide open, it's competition," Watson said. "We want to see who responds to the competition and to the system and who can manage the installation (of the offense).

"It's a new year, new season. We'll roll the ball out and see what we've got. Let them compete."

-- Transfer QB Zac Lee's status for spring practice remains questionable. His progress from a December knee injury is essentially being evaluated day to day, Watson said, stressing that there's no reason to rush things.

"We need him to be prepared for the (fall) season," Watson said.

-- I-back Marlon Lucky is set to participate in spring drills. Watson said he remains hopeful that Cody Glenn (foot) will join in drills at some point. Because of depth concerns, safety Major Culbert will continue to practice at I-back, as he did for the Cotton Bowl.

I don't really like the idea of Culbert practicing at I-back. If Culbert wants to contribute in the secondary next year, then I think he needs all the practice reps he can get thier now during the spring. Unless it is a full time move to running back, I don't like it.

I agree with Gamecocks about Culbert. He needs to be getting the reps with the secondary. I also agree with DJR that Nicks can be a beast. I remember hearing he is one of those linemen with a real nasty streak. Maybe he can bring that out of Murtha who has played like a weak kitten so far.

I agree with moving Nicks to left tackle bc he is by far the best tackle we have. However with Slauson on the right side at guard I though that was supposed to be the big strong pound it out side of the line. With Murtha I dont see that anymore. He is more of a pass blocker, IMO he is a little bit of a cupcake. He is more finese and not really the type to get nasty and mean which is needed in a run blocker. Who knows though, maybe he made some solid steps this past winter and will continue to.
