Huskers Look to Use RBs More in Passing Game

Nebraska is looking for ways to make Tommy Armstrong more efficient and less risk-prone, and one avenue could be an increased use of his I-backs in the passing game.

As NU started incorporating Terrell Newby, Devine Ozigbo and Mikale Wilbon more into that work last week, offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf liked what he was seeing.

“We’ve thrown some balls to all three of them out of the backfield, and it’s looked good,” Langsdorf said.

Nebraska backs caught 35 passes last season, similar to the average over the previous three years. But some swing passes or screens could be another way to get them the ball in 2016, and some success with check-down throws might be a way for Armstrong to improve his career completion rate (54 percent) and lower his interception total (16 a year ago).

Usually I would think this is a great way to increase completion percentage and give the backs a chance to work in space.

But this is also about the worst ball that TA throws. Which is saying something.

So I guess we'll see.

This would also require Tommy to utilize his check downs and not throw YOLO bombs into triple coverage. Something he hasn't proven he can do consistently in 4+ years on the team.

I have hope we'll see improvement. Necessary amount of improvement? Debateble because by this point I think Tommy simply is what he is. But another thing I think, is that we'll know pretty darn quick in game one if his in-game mindset and his ability to handle the moment has improved. If it hasnt, and he quickly reverts back to yolo ball as he did on the first play of the spring game (whcih really shouldnt be used to define anything, but was rather hilarious anyway) then we're in trouble again. Youth on both lines and running back, Tommy has to be at the top of his game. And that doesnt necessarily mean a playmaking sense.

Yeah, I think you're right here.

Though it depends on who you listen to. TA played pretty well against BYU last year. Not spectatular but his stats were pretty good. People were tripping all over themselves to say how much he had improved. But if you were really watching him you could tell that the footwork issues hadn't been fixed. It just happened to be a game where he was a bit above average.

TA is a 5th year senior and has started many games at NU - he should be able to improve in those 2 areas

If he didnt as a 4th year junior, there's nothing that guarantees he will as a 5th year senior. This is why it wouldnt be shocking if he appears to have not. Esp in a system that is not for him.

I hope that TA can improve a ton this year. I know that at this point it seems like a stretch to think he will improve but if he can learn to stay calm and make better decisons with the ball it will at least improve his interception problem. Of course that does not necessarily up him completions stat. If he can cut the interceptions in half or better it would be huge for the offense. Turnovers are just devistating to momentum.

I'd say his ceiling raised last year, but his average level didn't.
outside of Georgia Tech or Navy, with his timing/accuracy/decision making, I'm not so sure what offense does fit him

What Malzahn does at Auburn, Tommy is taylor made for. Tommy can throw the ball. He's capable. But he's a quick thinker. you have to put him in position where he doesnt have to manipulate the passing game. The manipulation is done for him, and he's got simple reads and commands. Aka, heavy dose of RPOs. Not to mention, there's a lot of game tape evidence to suggest the more he runs, and the more he gets hit, the more he gets into the game. Maybe the coaches do intend to use him as a hammer more this year, knowing what they know. Who knows why they didnt last year. But we'll see.

Tommy can improve as practice does help and he will have had a bunch more practices since last year. Yes, most players improve more in the first couple years than by the time of the senior season but remember that some rather drastic changes in the offenses, patterns, blocking and etc. were all introduced before last year. Therefore, this is somewhat like a junior season maybe.

In fairness to Tommy, it should be also noted that many of our screens and swing passes last year were not well executed by any of the players. Poor positioning by the backs and receivers as well as inadequate execution of the linemen who have key roles to play in setting up the screens (they have to feign regular pass protection and or show other blocking assignments to fool the defenders into thinking they are getting a good shot to sack the QB. I expect that all of these aspects of these type plays will be improved significantly. It will be more likely they plays will work (the throw, the catch, the blocking, etc) when all 11 guys do their parts better. We often had chances for these plays to work but were just a little off in various things, including the throws. Some of the screens didn't work because the throw was too early or too late, not so much just a poor throw. Tommy's forte is not the 'touch' passes but on the other hand, he has shown signs in my view of getting better. I remain hopeful.

I think this is because he was coached in a system with such a frantic and pass paced mindset. So he throws the ball that way. No touch. Everything was go go go under Beck. So we'll see after a full year of tutledge under these new guys if he's able to put more touch on the balls. Like I said earlier. We'll see quickly if hes ready to manage the moment.

This isn't solely for Tommy's benefit, though it SHOULD help prevent a handful of INT's in the end. This is going to be a big part of our offense after Tommy is gone as well.
