LJSNebraska has nine newcomers to its roster, walk-ons included, yet none is taller than 6 feet, 8 inches. The Huskers’ tallest returning player is 6-10 sophomore Jake Hammond, who totaled a mere 36 minutes his true freshman season.
Even with one scholarship still vacant, Miles and his staff couldn’t fill it this offseason despite interest from a handful of immediately eligible graduate transfers who were staring at immediate and vast playing time.
“We’re not anti-recruiting big guys,” Miles quipped. “We like big guys.”
But with a lack of low-post players, this Nebraska team is beginning to evoke images of the 2008-09 Huskers.
That group, the shortest in NCAA Division I that season, produced the only .500 conference finish in six seasons under former coach Doc Sadler. Nebraska’s tallest starter, 6-8 forward Chris Balham, averaged 10.1 minutes and two points per game.
