Huskers Ranked 18th by A.S.

We're dropping.

We started out (a month or so after the season ended) as being #13, then 15, now 18. Ah well, who gives a crap. Sometimes I want us to be lower until it matters. The media seems to love it when we're ranked in the top 10 (um, which hasn't happened for a while of course) and then start voodoo practices so we fall and fail miserably. Then Husker Nation is pissed, then the Huskers bounce back, but it's too late.

What did I just say? :dunno

Did you read the part where it said there are rumors we are switching to a 3-4 base? I never heard that, does anyone know anything about this?

I can only hope that we do not move to a 3-4 base. That will not help our defensive line out at all, and as we do have VERY talented LBs, we don't have the athletic ability to pull that off...at least AT THIS POINT. Maybe later on in the season as a nice little stunt package, but right now I don't like that idea. Then again, half the time anyone writes anything about us...they just don't like us, so they want to stir up Husker Nation.

Yay for ridiculous polls!!
:yeah

There is no reason to have anyone ranked before October. The 'experts' can pick anyone they want, but anyone has a shot to make a run...and the pre-season king of the mountain can fall quickly.

Does 'Desert Swarm' ring a bell???

I would like to see a 3-4 just NOT as our base. With the talent we have at LB this year we should play some 3-4 for a different look. The more we can throw in to confuse an offense the better. Lets just stick with the good ol 4-3 as our base.

I've seen about 10 different polls that have us in the 18-22 range. While it's easy to shrug it off and say it doesnt matter, what one has to take into account is that the higher we are ranked initially, the better the springboard to a bigger bowl game at the end of the year. If we start out at 18 and lose two games (what i expect us to do), we could still end up in the top 10 or close to it. If we start at 25 or out of the polls completely, its a steep uphill climb to get into the better bowls and rankings. I agree that these are rediculously early, but the more media dumbasses we have on our side early on, the better. Of course, it doesnt matter if we don't take care of business on the field.

Maybe people are getting saying/thinking we're going to run a 3-4 because of the talk of SteveO lining up on the line as a Joker(?), like we did with Demorriro.

I hate the way they release only one team a day. I was actually hoping for something a bit higher, top 15 or so. The big question is how our special teams will play. Especially with the new rule changes.

Ugh, don't remind me about Special Teams. Our Special Teams has been abismal at best since 2002. We haven't returned ANYTHING for a TD in terms of returns (as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong). Not only that, but our coverage is sad. I don't like worrying every time we kick the ball if it's just going to end up in our end zone. And speaking of kicking...do we NOT have someone (not necessarily a kicker) who can boot that ball into the endzone!? I know they moved kickoffs back 5 yards, but seriously.

Oh, and we NEED to be better at kick returns. Bottom line.

I see your point, but don't competely agree. Look at Boise State. I believe that they started the season UNRANKED and play in a "weak" conference. Granted they ran the table....but look where they ended up and the bowl game they got into.

Now if a big XII team starts outside of the top 25 and only loses 2 games (as you say)...a BCS bowl and top 10 is easily within reach.

In fact, Boise St., Wisconsin and Arkansas all started the pre-season unranked (according to the '06 rivals preseason) and finished in the top 12 in the BCS at the end of the season. 1 team (Boise St.) had an undefeated season in a lower conference to get there. The other two had strong seasons in power conferences to get there.

Point is....don't worry about rankings. Beat the teams you are supposed to beat and a game or two you are expected to lose or be close and you'll be rewarded.

Ranking wise, a loss early in the season is traditionally easier to recover from than a loss at the end of the season. But as tough as our schedule is this year it really doesn't matter. Ten teams on our upcoming schedule were bowl eligible. We have too many tripwires to get through. We start with two tough games while most other teams are scheduling cupcakes. Then at the end of the year we have a CCG and a bowl game. But a win against USC will get us a nice bounce. We need Purify for that game.
