OWHJune 11, 2015 is the five-year anniversary of Nebraska announcing it would be joining the Big Ten. This is a look back at the events and stories that led to NU's departure from the Big 12 and inclusion in an old, storied league that Husker fans once, well, gently chided. And perhaps that's putting it gently.
The retrospective will generally focus on Nebraska and the tumult inside the Big 12, not necessarily touching upon all the schools the Big Ten might or might not have contacted or wooed. It's generally agreed upon, for example, that the Big Ten has long adored Notre Dame the way Jay Gatsby reached out to the green light on Daisy Buchanan's boat dock. In a Dec. 27, 2009 "Frank The Tank" blog post on conference realignment, Notre Dame and Texas are viewed as "the only real choices" for the Big Ten. Nebraska is a "contender" that scores lower than Syracuse.
