Huskers Will Go Fast, but Also Change Speeds

In actuality, UCF ran 924 plays on offense last season, which put the Knights 47th in the country among snaps taken for the year. It was an offense that averaged about 73 plays a game. Sort of in that meaty part of the curve of what many teams average, really. UCF's offense that ranked fifth nationally in yards, and second in points, was changing up the pace just like the plays themselves.

"We’re going to mix our tempos — like a baseball pitcher," Walters said just before this spring ball began. "That’s what we do as an offense, we keep the defense off-balance. The guys understand what we’re trying to do tempo-wise."

You could see that change-up being executed even during the early drills of this past Tuesday's practice. Quarterback Tristan Gebbia could be seen moving quickly back to his spot immediately after a play to set up for another snap. Everybody on offense was moving fast after a play, ready to go again. Still, the defense didn't know for sure when that next snap was coming.

And true to what has been said, there were guys you might think would be third-teamers getting reps immediately from the jump of practice.

"The more guys you have contributing, the better the culture," Walters said. "We’re going to encourage guys to find a fit on offense, defense. The more guys we have playing, the better we’re going to be culture-wise."

Ok, but they missed out on a whole game due to the hurricane. What was their rank in snaps per game?
UCF 72 plays a game - 57th in country

Nebraska 71 plays a game- 77th in country

Nebraska had the ball on offense that much because their defense was constantly giving up scores, usually quick ones. UCF has the ball that much because they were scoring so many points. I don’t remember the stat, but they had a very high amount of points per possession.

Here is a chart of Time between Snaps from 2016, ranked from lowest to highest. I'm guessing UCF got faster in 2017.
