I dont want anyone fired per se.

I want a meaningful discussion about football, the team, and why some things occur.

There may be very logical reasons for these things that i dont know. Some of you may have opinions that clear the water.

1. why do we waste eligibility. Its obvious that Holt, Thenarse, and Young plus some others are not gonna play except for special teams. Why not redshirt them and give them 4 full years?

2. Coz may not have all the talent he needs or wants. However, after several mistakes and basic fear of contact time and again, why not try someone other than shanle. It appears to me that some defensive players have no fear of seeing the bench. sitting people down for continuous mistakes might make them play better.

3. Since we didnt redshirt them at least let the freshman play in the 3rd and 4th quarters against teams like troy and la tech. that was one thing osborne was masterful at. giving young guys quality game time so that next year they arent basically rookies.

4. Does anyone think carrikers added weight might be a slight problem with his sack total. the man is a stud dont get me wrong. did you see him playing def tackle (noseguard) he was blowing people up. maybe him and suh in there full time with turner outside would be just what the doctor ordered. I thought the mizzou game was our best in terms of pressure from the front 4 and that came a lot with AC in the middle.

5. Our offense should be sick next year. while i love taylor, he is not a great QB. at this point next year i believe we will be saying Zach Who? i think keller is a stud. Keller Brooks and Henry tear it up in practice.

6. It will never happen but what about Glenn at Sam or Will size speed aggressive loves to hit how good would he possibly be

7. Please get someone to kick the ball in the end zone on a regular basis and that has a range of over 40 yards

Because we need the best players available for special teams. Special teams are 1/3 of the game and are very important. If we could get away with playing walk ons and do just the same, I am sure they would. Look around the country, all other schools play a lot of their top freshman on special teams to get their feet wet.

Shanle has made some good plays this season, but has often taken a bad angle and gotten beat. I agree that it might not hurt to rotate Thenarse or Culbert for him a little more freely. It would, if nothing else, keep him fresh the whole game.

Young was playing corner in the 4th quarter against KU. They all played a bunch against Nicholls St. and made their way on the field in the second half for the Troy game. Thenarse was playing up until the end of the ISU game and Culbert played a lot against Missouri.

I agree that the front 4 got a good amount of pressure in this game. I am not sure that his added weight has hindered him this year because he gets doubled on almost every play when he is at end. He has helped free up Moore on the other end and has caused a disruption. Eventhough it doesn't show up on the stat sheet, better believe that NFL scouts take notice. For example, I think that Mario Williams had 6.5 sacks last year and his opposite end had about 12 or 13.

I agree with you on this. 1 more year for everyone involved and a QB that is as good or better running the show. For the record, I think the offense is pretty darn good right now, leaps and bounds past years 1 and 2. Taylor is averaging 6 more yards passing on 11 less attempts per game. The running backs are averaging 2 yards more per carry. This is great improvement, and there is still more room to improve. Hard to ignore those numbers, as much as Vomitneck wants to.

Uh...no. Glenn has roughly the same speed as Brandenburgh.

I have to agree, it was nice seeing some touchbacks on saturday. I would be happy with a kicker that hits 45 and in consistently. I think Congdon is capable of this.

It's not wasting eligibility. It was different when you could have more than 85 kids on scholarship. You could hoard good players and keep em on the side lines for a year before they saw the light of day.

Anyone know how many kids Osborne had on scholarship at any given time? Before the 85 rule came into effect of course.

If the kid can play and help the team win, get him out there. Any coach will tell you that special teams is a great way for a kid to get used to the speed difference between high school and college.

Redshirting a kid to "save" him tells me that the coach isn't confident he can't replace him with a kid with equal or greater talent in 4 years. Redshirting because the kid needs time to develop is an entirely different issue. That makes sense.

Coach Callahan is getting better at the redshirt issue. This was a hot button topic with me as well. A couple years ago he played a couple players in the Western Illinois game that never saw the field the rest of the year. Now he's at least giving them exposure to game situations on special teams. If Zach Potter wasn't playing against Pitt last year he wouldn't have been in there to block the kick to decide the game.

ZT is a very good player that has been called on to just manage several of the games. Yet he has managed to tie the school TD record with 20 and there are games left. The protection provided by the O-Line has been an issue although they are much improved this year and the way the young pups played against MU shows hope.

i dont know how many players TO had on scholi but i do remember NU having a freshman team that if you didnt make varsity right away you were on that team and played all of the JUCO teams in the area. then if you didnt make varisty you red shirted.

Mike Rozier was one that played on the freshman team. that is why when they show his stats it is only for 3 years and not 4. he was at NU for all 4 years. alot of people believed that he left college after his junior year, but he was a senior when he won the heisman

Rozier had to go to Junior college for one season before he came to NU.

Coz doesn't decide who plays in the secondary. Elmassian is the secondary coach. He basically said at the midpoint of the season that the Thenarse, Culbert and others were progressing to the point he felt comfortable putting them in the game. Thenarse made a couple plays back against ISU and Culbert played a lot vs. Missouri. If you pay attention you'll see one or the other of them in the game about once every third series.

While Shanle may not be the ideal player back there, (likewise with Ruud for some people) there really wasn't/isn't any other choice. You have to choose between an upperclassman who has the experience of doing it all before or you can play the freshman who probably doesn't know what he's doing.

In my personal opinion, if the coaches are doing their job then the younger players will always look better than the upperclassmen. If a freshman or sophomore is in the game getting burned every play we'd be screaming at the coaches to get him off the field. The reason Culbert and Thenarse have looked pretty good so far is because Elmassian only puts them on the field in positions where he feels confident they'll succeed. The upperclassmen don't have that luxury and they've got to play every down, even when they may be overmatched.

As far as Cody Glenn moving to linebacker maybe next year, if that would be a sick combo of speed and strength on the outside, if anyone would ever consider it. And for carriker, I think he has definitley put on weight. I am not for sure if has been good weight or bad weight. I think he just gets different types of double teams from game to game. some of the guys being better on one team to the next. In the missouri game, i thought it was great to see carriker playing some tackle and putting turner on the outside with his speed. I think it would be a great thing to run once in a while cause i think that carriker can handle his own on the inside and i love BT's speed on the outside.

I am a big believer in playing your best players. The kids that are good enough right out of HS to play big time college football need to see the field. Whether it is special teams or later in the game. Get them the game experience they need so they can mature quickly and make big plays for the future.
