Remember, Turner Gill is now at KU. If Mangino can get 10 win seasons well need I say more.
How did Mangino get 10 wins? Four HUGE cupcakes in the OOC, (teams, not real cupcakes) B12 north, NU, CU and KSU were down, ISU is ISU so the only competition was MU. In the south they did not have OU, UTerus and TTech, but Baylor aTm (they were down) and only competition was OSU
well said. the only team KU played that had a winning record that year was MU, the last game of the regular season. They missed all the big 3 from the south and caught the rest of the north, minus MU, in their worst years. in other words. a perfect storm for KU. what they did following shows that it truely was a once every 100 years type of season
Virginia Tech, A&M, and Oklahoma State all had winning records that year. I agree that KU was overrated but they did actual have a pretty decent team that year.
i was talking regular season, so yes VT in the bowl, and OSU due to their bowl win. I did miss ATM, so you got me there. And KU did have a decent team. But again, not playing the three top teams in the south and losing to the only other good team in your division is not that great. It was a perfect storm. And personally I dont think Turner has a chance in you know where of touching that kind of season at KU.
And thats not a knock on Turner. But I dont think KU has the support to really become a player and they constantly lose recruting battles to other big 12 north programs. When Kansas (the state) gets really good players they either leave or go to KSU. They almost never beat MU for a player ( if i remember correctly MU is something like 29 of the last 32 in getting players when both schools offer) , they rarely get one over NE. SO if they are constantly lossing their wish list players to other schools, can get the best in their state & dont have the things in place to be a top program, then I just think Turner is set up for second rate.
For the first several years of Pinkel's tenure and for years before, the exact same thing could be said of MU. NU would raid Missouri for their best players, like Wistrom. Osborne in the '80s said that the only way that ISU, CU, KU, KSU and MU would get any better is to give their coaches more than 2-3 years revolving door to get their programs established. Snyder, Mangino and Pinkel all struggled early, but the administration stuck with them and results followed.
