The coach immediately before Bob Devaney was Bill Jennings. He stated that the University of Nebraska football team could never be used to satisfy the pride of the citizens of Nebraska, so people shouldn't expect too much from the Cornhuskers. The easy approach for the leaders of the university would have been to accept that analysis. Why didn't they accept "average"?
