If you went to OSU game...

Hello, first post here.

Im a lifelong OSU Buckeye fan (grew up in Lancaster, about 30 miles from the campus). I've since moved to Colorado, and had the good fortune to be able to come to Lincoln for the NU/OSU game last year. I have to say that I had a GREAT time, and tip my 'bucks hat to the fans I met last year. Almost to a person,the NU fans were welcoming - always a bit of good natured trash talk, but as I walked through the tailgate I could not go far before I was offered a warm handshake and a cold beer. I did "meet" a couple of "well lubricated" fans on my way back to my seat who thought they would like to fight me because I had on my OSU colors, but we all have those I guess.

In any case, I had hope to go back to Columbus with my NU alum neighbor this year to give him a taste of football OSU style, but unfortunately it didn't work out. BUT... was hoping to hear from those who were there:

• Did you attend any of the tailgates or pre/post game parties? How was it - knowing OSU tailgates, and this being a monster game I would imaging the pre and post game had to be off the charts. Hopefully you were treated as well as I was in Lincoln.
  
• Where in the shoe were you sitting - its usually hard to get tickets, especially for a big game. Im sure the NU allocation was up in C deck in the closed end of the stadium (I was in the CU allocation last year).
  
• How would you compare the game experience to Memorial? I thought both were CLASSIC college football at its best. Its amazing to me the difference between them and ... say CU, which has one of the prettiest stadiums I've ever been to, yet they cant seem to sell it out.
  

Game wise, last year's and this years game just seemed like a mirror image to me. It was a long drive back to CO last year after being curb stomped in the fourth by NU. I thought OSU was in for a LONG night after the first Saturday, but am obviously happy that OSU found their stride after that. Turnovers killed NU. It also looked to me like the NU OL had some major scheme problems that were not addressed as the game wore on. Hard to protect Martinez when OSU was repeatedly sprinting into the backfield untouched. Not sure what was up with that.

I really wish that OSU and NU had been in the same division. This has the potential to be a great rivalry... and its going to be a long wait until the next regular season game. Would love to come up to Lincoln again for a game, maybe Ill find a way to do that even when its not OSU.

Welcome. I didn't attend this year's game but want to go to Columbus just to experience the Shoe. Glad you had a good time in Lincoln and sorry for our inebriated fans. We'd rather not have our school represented that way. I believe the ushers will take care of the problem if you report it. I noticed the NCAA running commercials so I think bad fan behavior is getting more attention.

If you compare last year's game to this year I think we owe you a curb stomping . Last year you only needed to suffer through defeat during the last few minutes of the game. This year we only made it worrisome for a short time early in the game before you schooled us. We need improvements on D to make it an interesting rivalry. Do you have a couple of spare John Simons that you could send our way? It does seem ridiculous when your defenders ran right by one of our O-linemen. Not sure who he was blocking but there's something wrong going on.

This isn't a dig but what are your thoughts on OSU being the top rated B1G school but being ineligible for post-season play? I always want fellow conference mate to do well and represent the conference well in a bowl game so I'm a little conflicted about OSU and the remainder of their schedule. It would have been better if you had this year's success, last year and not be so good this year.

OSU got in trouble. They are paying the price for it. It is better to take success anytime you can get it!

That being said, this year is a building year to install the new offense and get ready for next year. I think OSU is ahead of schedule right now according to Meyer and unfortunately for Husker fans it was OSU's breakout game in which after a slow start the offense became unstoppable.

I think next year OSU will be the clear favorite and will have most of the starters back on both sides of the ball. Braxton will be another year older, another year better and it will be a scary thing for all other B1G conference members.

I highly recommend a trip to Columbus. Game day at the shoe is a special, and often electric event, much like Memorial was last year. Because of the long history, I have yet to experience anything quite like Michigan day anywhere in the NCAA or NFL. I thought the pre-game party/tailgate was very comparable, although OSU has some pretty large parking lots near the stadium that are often populated by live bands and huge diamond-vision screens. I have promised my NU alum neighbor that we will go.

I will say that I was VERY happy to hear that Nebraska was joining the big 10, as I feel that NU has always played a B1G style game. Parochially, I'm also happy to have another B1G football venue within driving distance of me in CO.

RE: Simons, I really think that was a scheme problem. I plan on going back to my DVR to see if I can figure out what was going on, but if memory serves I think at least one of those hurried Martinez enough to throw a pick. On the other hand, if NU could have gotten him a little more time, he may well have been able to exploit what has been a pretty soft OSU secondary. I was surprised to see NU trying to run so much, OSU has been pretty good against the run, but gives up BIG plays pretty regularly.

I have very mixed feelings about the post season thing. First and foremost, OSU got what they deserved. The cover-up was MOST disappointing to me. I have no problem with the sanctions, but I do wish the NCAA could be a little more consistent about its discipline (e.g. Miami), but that certainly does not excuse the infractions. There is a sick part of me that really hopes OSU runs the table tho... just to make a point. But realistically, that is not going to happen - OSU is way to dependent on Miller, and the secondary has not proven itself to be solid enough to hold on throughout the season. But if we can just wreck Michigan's year... yeah... that would be nice.

I arrived on Friday and went to a restuarant call Thurman's and after 2hours and many beers final got to eat the biggest and best hamburger I have seen/eaten. During the wait I talked to several OSU fans and they were very nice and informative. They said they wanted to treat NU fans the same as they were treated in Lincoln and to be honest I think they succeeded. BTW the hamburger I ate had 3x3/4 pound hamburger patties, half-pound or so of ham, 6 slices of bacon, lots of cheese, jalepenos, and mushrooms and was amazing. I didn't finsih no worries. Saturday I went and toured the campus and scouted out our game plan for the day. I was impressed with the stadium and thought it was kind of similiar to Memorial. We went to several bar's and talked with alot of OSU fans and each were kind and even bought us drinks. Furthermore we were invited to several tailgates and were able to go to a couple and had a great time. One thing I did not know was how OSU fans are so into their band but it compares to Texas A&M kind of passion imo. The only real issue outside of losing was at halftime. The band took so long that during the script part, that 2 NU player's came out to try and get 2 quick warmup kicks in and were booed. One OSU fan turned to me and said that was so disrepectful and I did reply with the fact that it was also disrepectful to not allow NU to warmup and I left it at that. I don't think he realizes that the band is not a requirement to play football and if they went any longer the ref's would have had to boot them from the field. I am not kidding though, our players did not get on the field until 1 min and did not have time to throw the football or anything else. Anyways, it was fun and I look forward to seeing another game someday in Columbus. OSU fans, thanks for being great hosts to Huskers fans during our stay. Go Big Red!!!

I will assure you, the refs wouldnt have booted TBDBITL off the field! If that would have happened, the sniper/sharp shooters who are members of the Ohio State Highway Patrol (strategically placed throughout the stadium) would have taken the refs out LOL!

The band is a big deal in Columbus.

In the unlikely situation that we beat Michigan, I have to want Michigan to win when they play OSU so that we look better. Otherwise it would be better for OSU to win so that there is clearly a good team in the conference. One problem I see with the B1G is that all of the upsets we have hurt our image. Take last year for example. Wisconsin was a good team but OSU and MSU beat them. We beat MSU and OSU but stunk against Wisconsin and Michigan. People probably don't believe the B1G can have that many good teams and since we don't do well in the bowls we get perceived to be overall mediocre. It sucks that OSU can't represent us in a bowl game this year because they could probably beat a good team. Michigan on the other hand could win the conference and represent us in a bowl game. I think you'll beat Michigan this year.

Scary thought about Braxton. It looks like we don't play each other next year. That is too bad since we get Taylor back and he is improving. Even with some of the boneheaded mistakes we make on offense I think it is good enough that if our defense was better we could be a top 15 team this year and maybe next year. Our defense seems to be trending downward so a CCG matchup is unlikely next year. I'd ask other people what they think but it seems we are still in meltdown mode.

A Thurminator!!!! I love that place, a real hole in the wall, but GREAT food. That burger was on Man vs Food a while back. It is exceptional, but does require that you have an angioplasty within a week or so. Another place in German Village that is a staple is Schmidts. There is a large German population in Columbus, and Schmidts is fantastic. Have a "Bahama Mama" - it is something I crave every time I go to Columbus. The Arena district downtown is also a great place to hang out (not so much a football Saturday thing, but a good place to go if you are there for a few days).

Im glad to hear that you were treated well... I would expect that, but you never know. I do think that when you are attending games at schools with long and successful traditions, the fans generally are pretty friendly as they "have been there before". There are some great bars around campus, but I really think the best place to be pre-game is out in the tailgates. Just like in Lincoln, its a great atmosphere, and the food is incredible.

RE: the band - Yeah, we are pretty serious about TBDBITL. I suspect the band was out extra long because it was homecoming, and the band is a deeply entrenched tradition at the shoe. I dont know what the rules implications are, but I would rather have seen Halftime extended by a bit than to have chased the band off, OR to limit warm up time. For what it is worth, the shoe is the only stadium that I insist on being in well before game time - simply because because I want to see Script Ohio. It NEVER gets old to me.

Im looking forward to my next visit to Memorial... does not even have to be an OSU game. My youngest daughter is in school in eastern IA, so a stop in Lincoln could be in my future!

I also think its too bad that we wont play each other in the regular season next year... but there is alwasy the B1G championship

The cream puffs are just down right decadent. Its pretty clear that you either did your homework before going to Columbus, or had very good advice!

Schmidts and Thermans are both the bomb. Can't go wrong with either.

The band here is as revered as the football team. It really started with Woody Hayes and his passion for the band. I'm just glad the kickers weren't closer, because the marching band stops for nothing, lol. They plowed over an espn cameraman who got to close.

I'll be honest, the only reason I want to destroy every B1G team we play is so that when preseason rankings come out next year, we'll have a better chance at a NC run by beginning the ranking higher. Regarding your last statement, it would have been better had our AD Gene Smith, self imposed a bowl ban instead of assuming we wouldn't get one, that way not only would we not have lost to Florida last year, but we would already be bowl eligible this year and as it stands right now, be playing in the inaugural B1G championship game.
