Brief injury updates Posted by: Steve Sipple on September 5, 2010 at 12:30PM CST

Nebraska junior right tackle Marcel Jones, projected as the starter, sat out Saturday night with a sore back, according to Husker head coach Bo Pelini.

"He was available to play, but we didn't want to use him unless we had to," the coach said.

Senior D.J. Jones started in Marcel's place, and redshirt freshman Jeremiah Sirles saw time at RT in addition to starting at LT.

Starting defensive end Cameron Meredith left the game with two minutes left in the first half and didn't return. Pelini indicated Meredith's injury might not be serious. "He's OK," the coach said.

Husker defensive coordinator Carl Pelini shed a little light on starting linebacker Will Compton's foot injury, which occurred Thursday in practice and has the sophomore sidelined indefinitely.

"It really is just a healing process, and it's kind of a wide, wide range of time," Carl said when asked about the timetable for Compton's return.

Thanks for the updates. I really hope we get Compton back before the Washington game. While David played outstanding, Whaley and Martin still have a ways to go.

funny, Bo said in the post game, when asked about David, he didn't like his play very much and he was often out of position. i think the kid relies on his instinct more than Bo's scheme.......he will have to get over that.

Umm...or maybe he shouldn't?! I'm only kind of kidding, but his playing style kind of reminded me of Terrell Farley, and until he went stupid off the field, it worked pretty well for him. I understand that they need to know the 'D', but for it being David's first game as a Husker, he'll continue to learn the defense and keep making plays with his instincts.

Oh, and thanks for the updates huskerscott. I really hope Compton is back before the K-State game.

He also relied on his sheer athleticism and speed at times.

Not to be a douche but being even a step out of position against Texas, OU, or Jake Locker will result in a missed tackle and 5 or more yards.

I heard from a few players that Lavonte butts heads a little bit and doesn't spend the time in the film room that guys like Prince and Gomes did in the fall. One player told me that Lavonte is out of position in practice a lot of times but also seems to get lucky and get the tackle. He also mentioned that a few times as practice the last week Lavonte was caught out of position and gave up some big gains down the middle.

That's to be expected when you're starting LB's that have little-to-none Nebraska game experience. That isn't just LB play though. And are these the same players who give the guy props to the press? I'm not saying David is close to perfect or doesn't make mistakes. I'm questioning why players would throw him under the bus via a conversation with you.

Its kinda like throwing a co-worker under the bus. It'll screw with the chemistry of the team. Pretty soon you got a divided locker room. Cant have it.
