edit: This might be obivous to some, but make sure you specify what IM service you use.

I dont.. except at work with all the Bobs. Ive been meaning to sign up for AOL b/c it seems most use that one. I use MSN at work... which do you reco Dave?

 
You might want to look at Trillain. Trillian is a multi-platform IM client, which allows you to connect to MSN, AIM, and other services from one interface. At one time, AOL blocked Trillain, but I think that's no longer the case. Anyone know?

Yea I think they got that ironed out.

I use GAIM, which has the same idea as Trillian. I used Trillian for awhile, but it's goofy interface got to me after awhile. Check it out! They have a Windows port http://gaim.sourceforge.net
