LINCOLN - Start with statistics because football is complicated, but numbers are simple.

The past four games, Nebraska's offense has capped its first possession with a touchdown. In seven game-opening drives this year, the Huskers have produced 378 yards and 35 points.

The Blackshirts, meanwhile, have allowed 101 yards on seven opening drives.

That adds up to four punts, three turnovers and zero points.

In those first quarters, NU has outscored opponents 69-7.

This is one area that we have shown mass improvements from last year. I don't know for sure but we didn't score first in most of the games in 05. This is a good sign.

A strong start to the game is always important. Getting that first score is always the hardest and when we do it on the first drive it is downhill from there. :restore

This is very important for multiple reasons but most importantly because it forces their offense to get one-dimensional when we get up big early. All of us agree that our secondary is the weakest part of our defense. Do you think the defense would have an easier time stopping them if we knew what they were going to do or if we had to look out for play-action and runs as well?

Yeah this year seems to be a complete 180 degree turnaround from last year. Last year it seemed we struggled in the 1st half and usually went into half-time trailing the other team. Then in the 2nd half we'd explode. This year we come out strong, score early and often but then settle down after the 2nd half.
