Is winning the North that important?

Pretty good article on LJS

We bash the Big 12 Conference’s weak North Division in football. We point out its not-so-good record against the South. We shake our heads. We make jokes. Some are even funny.

Is winning the North really an accomplishment?

It's always IMPORTANT to win the North, because if we win the North we have a shot at winning the Big 12, if we win the Big 12, we get a BCS birth, and if we get a BCS birth we may just be playing for an MNC (not this year, but in other years).

However, I don't think it is much of an ACCOMPLISHMENT to win the North. It is kind of like winning a 'tard fight (ok, sorry that was insensitive and not politically correct, but true).

Now, win the North and pull off the upset in the Championship game, that would be an accomplishment. But, we have to win the North to even get a shot. That is why it is more important than ever.

How could it not be important??? For the exact reason mj just pointed...we have a shot at winning the Big XII....which, in turn leads to a BCS bid!!! DUHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

Last year, Florida St. was 7-4 and won the ACC championship against a 10-1 Virginia Tech team and then ended up in the BCS. Winning the division is extremely important. NU already showed once that they are capable of playing with Texas, and Texas has looked beatable this season.

exactly

got to win it to play for the championship, and go to a bcs bowl. it is possible to not win the north and still go to a bcs bowl, but highly unlikely and will probably never happen again. (the year NU lost bad to sCUm and played in the Rose Bowl for the NC)

Yes. Duh.

You gotta win the north, no matter how much it sucks. You can't get anywhere else without winning your division.

I agree. It's definately important. I think the article exploited a poor choice of words. Instead of "accomplishment" he probably is meaning "glamorous". It's not a glamorous goal to win the north, but it is an accomplishment.

Just my take on it.

Point of order.

Winning the north does not lead to a BCS bid. Beating Texas ( have the outright clinched?) does. My only hope is we don't see operation lockdown in the XII game if they do get there becuase there would be no point in playing to win, this teams' goals were met.
