I've figured out Watson's confusion

Ok, I got to looking at the offensive play calling last night and was completely confused at the players inability to run the ball to where there was a hole. When the hole disappeared then the RB would just run it into the pack of bodies and go down for little to no gain. Then I got to thinking that Watson might be watching old tape of Nebraska and saw our boys pushing the RB ahead in surges to make additional yards. So he's just confused I figure. :ahhhhhhhh We just need to let him know that the RB goes ahead of the line before you bunch up and push, not behind the bunch. Then maybe we could move the football on the ground lol.

Or it could be that we just don't have the experience players to be able to use their periphery to find the gaps. Or we're not coaching how to do that. I'll probably never know.

The offense did a lot of good things last night. Yes, they managed only seven first downs, but Oklahoma has one of the premier front sevens in all of college football, not to mention we grinded out 140 yards on the ground when they consistently had 9 or 10 guys in the box.

I think the biggest problem now is quarterback and getting receivers to make plays. The offense was simplified and you could tell these guys were catching on to what was going to happen.

But we have to remember, this isn't some 90's offensive line with an experienced run game quarterback. We have a bunch of hybrid linemen who have a, for lack of a better team, clusterf*** of abilities that don't mesh well with one another.

On a few of those plays, honestly, there was no way to run to a different spot due to the defensive front. You could, for example, say to cut it back but a lot of times their DEs were in good containment position. The real problem is the O-line really aren't opening gaps and the insistence of Watson to run the exact same running play every first down is ridiculous.

In summation:

:espnsucks: :dunno :koolaid2: :boxosoap :nanalama :moreinteresting :nutz dedhoarse

Yeah, i just think our biggest problem has something going on with coaching on the offensive side of the ball.. either their not teaching correctly or not instilling game-like situations in practice.. or both

I would really like to see more of the power game that was featured last night... we actually stuck with it and although we didn't have great success in the beginning it did lead to some big plays for helu later in the game.. Also, off of that we need to use more playaction when the d isn't expecting it... Watson had maybe two times when he correctly called a play action.. I would love to see Green in there booting off of the play action with the ability to either tuck it and run or throwing..

Yeah, it is beating a dead horse. I was just shooting for humor. When I get this stressed watching our offense, then humor is how I cope.

I sure have fun watching our defense though.

You guys make excellent points about the line, but I did see many opportunities to break early or late and shoot a gap. It seems that with our youth in offense they are just doing the play as it was designed and not looking for opportunities to "modify" the play for extra yardage. It could be that youth is the problem or it could be that the players are afraid to think for themselves out there. I'm just mentally damaged from the Callahan years where thinking on your feet as a player was discouraged.
