JUCO Recruits

Four-Star Recruit
Most analysts, except for Rivals, seem to not like the recruiting of JUCOs. Yes, it is needed right now because of the immediate impact we need at certain positions. But yesterday I heard an ESPN analyst on the radio talking about how Nebraska is "throwing all their eggs in one basket" with the amount of JUCOs they are taking, saying that it could spell doom for them in the future. I tent to think differently, especially with the caliber of players they are picking up. A look at Nebraska JUCOs in the last two years:

2005 contributors:

Bowman - played a lot

Cryer - player a lot

Dagundaro - played a lot

Octavien - we know his story

Taylor - starting QB

Hardy - had him moments

Moore - contributed on special teams

Slauson - started some games

Tomerlin - has chance for PT next year

2005 busts:

Pasteur - might have a chance next year

Picou - not sure

Spain - couldn't make the grades, but will see PT next year

Wilson - got burned against Maine

2006

Allen - will probably see some time at one of the LB spots

Haines - could start at tackle since he is there for spring

Johnson - will obviously contribute at DT

Jones - should be an impact in the secondary

Nicks - could start at tackle

Purify - most likely a starter, big contributer to offense

Wilson - should provide nice 1-2 punch with Lucky

We took 8 Juco's this year. 16 highschool players. What you are saying sounds like they have this idea that all NU did was get Juco's. We got twice as many highschool players as Juco players. I am sure they said the same thing about Osbourne in the 80's.

Some people hate Juco's, some people don't. If a kid can play, let's have him.

I know and that's all they talk about. But it's understandable because not many teams took more JUCOs than us.

not many elite teams had several years of lousy recruiting. sure we got some good players but we didnt fill out our classes and now we are having depth problems and thats why we need jucos. i dont think coach callahan will ever stop taking jucos but he wont take as many per class as we move on down the road.

Tomerlin, Pasteur, and Picou all red-shirted. How can the later two be busts? Picou had to redshirt because of surgery. I do hope Tomerlin can contribute at TE this year but he certainly didn't contribute in 2005.

Rodney Picou had surgery. Jordan, the JUCO transfer, was available to play, but got to fall camp 2-3 weeks late. Tomerlin had severely injured ribs, which is why he didn't play. Hopefully this next season we can see what he can do.

Picou, Picou, sorry wrong cousin.

Wilson was a definate bust. Burned once and went up in flames never to be seen again.

We'll see, he's just going to be a Junior this season, so I will wait before writing him off for at least one more season.

Lots of teams grab JUCOS as a perceived quick fix. Wasn't there a time in the not so distant past (TO's years) that getting more than one or two JUCOs was considered a very bad thing at NU? ;)

i wonder how many Jucos' (on the average, every year) that USC, Miami, Notre Dame, etc. take? Few, cause they don't have to! Just an observation, not a complaint.
