Jury Duty

Well, I made it through a very stressful morning at the court house! I don't think I've been that nervous in ages. We went through all the legal stuff, and then the first 12 possible jurors were asked to sit in the jury box. Of course, I was #12. After several more instructions and legal stuff, the attorneys asked questions. The defending attorney chose me! He was very arrogant and I really didn't like him. Just by chance, a relative of mine was also among the prospects. He asked me, "Mrs. S******, I see you have a relative here....your cousin. Will that affect your decision? Will you get together and let her sway you one way or another?" I answered him, "I would have no problem with my cousin, but I DO have a problem being a Mom & Grandma. I'm not sure I can be partial in this type of case". He said, "You don't think you could give this man (the "rapist") a fair chance?" I told him I was sorry, but I just didn't think I could. A man next to me agreed and said he didn't think he could be fair either. The judge and attorneys went to a side bar and came back and dismissed us. The "rapist" was sitting right there which really bothered me too. I could hardly stand to look at him. The child was 4 when the rapes started, and ended 2 years ago when she was 12. Just totally made me sick! I guess I got a taste for the legal system in the few hours I was there. (My cousin was chosen after I left.)

Good for you. That's the way the system is supposed to work. Give the accused the fairest trial possible. I would most likely be standing on your side of the fence also.

I can't believe that you encountered an arrogant attorney. What about that AR. :laughpound

UPDATE: The rapist was found guilty of 5 out of 7 charges. It took 3 days, but my cousin said the judge was very pleased with their verdicts because....................THE CREEP IS GOING TO BE TRIED FOR RAPING 4 OTHER CHILDREN!! How sick is that??? What is wrong with people??? Apparently he showed no emotion whatsoever either. :steam

PS....it just so happened the day I was dismissed from jury duty, I was witness to an abuse case right outside our office. Next door is a counseling office and a man was fighting his ex-wife over their daughter. He jerked and twisted the little girl's arm so bad, she had to have x-rays to determine whether he had broken her arm! They also found marks and bruises on her little neck. A police officer asked me to make a statement, and they said that is what kept the little girl away from her Dad. What a day!!!

It's arrogance when it's not an attorney - when it's an attorney, it's justified...

I threw up in my mouth a little when I read this! What is this Boston Legal.......PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

I was told once that you never want a jury trial. Because the people on a jury, where the only ones stupid enough not to get out of jury duty! :P
