Just like 2003 but first let me introduce myself.

Boy of the Corn

Three-Star Recruit
Hello. I am not an every day poster but every once in a while like to voice my opinion. I used to post on huskerpedia until it was shut down. As a result I haven't posted anything for a couple weeks, but this week wanted to post and voice my opinion. I didn't want to pay anything to express my opinions so I came here. It will be good to read everyone's husker opinions again and occasionally write my thoughts.

Like I would assume most of you, I was extremely distraught over this game. Bottom line we just did not look very good and it is frustrating especially after hearing about the potential to go to a BCS game if we win out. Of course that won't happen now, and my I just hope our team has enough morals to play good next week and beat our boastful overrated pesky neighbor state and win our first big 10 trophy game. After watching the Michigan game today, I feel we are not getting things done the way I had expected. Obviously husker fans including myself have high expectations. Bo Pelini has won over 70% of his games, yet I was ready to call for the end of his term. Of course this came with the grave realization that this would not happen, unless, the rest of the season spirals downward. I then changed my tune to simply hoping perhaps some changes are made with assistant coaches, especially in the defensive area, although, I still am not sold on our offensive line (although improvement has been made). That being said, I was curious and took a look at the 2003 season, and noticed it was strikingly similar to our team this year.

In 2003 (the year Solich was fired and Bo Pelini was Defensive Coach) we lost 3 years. I looked further into those 3 losses (all by atleast 17 points) and made an observation that still seems to be true today: we could not and we cannot beat teams with a duel threat Quarterback. In 2003 our losses came to the following teams: Missouri, Texas, and Kansas State. All of these teams had a duel threat Quarterback. Brad Smith, Vince Young, and Ell Roberson all were able to defeat us. This year, our 3 losses this far have also come against duel threat attacks. Russel Wilson at WIsconsin, Dan Persa and Company at Northwestern, and Denard Robinson all got the best of us. This leaves me with some hope for the rest of the year as I do not believe Iowa has a rushing QB. However, It also leaves me with the question, Can Bo Pelini defeat a good team with a duel threat QB? What improvement on defense has been made from year one to now (obviously a big change from cosgrove, but what about after that)?

The fact that we use the back 7 to cover results in very tough duty for a DL without the 4.6 speed DE we currently don't have on our roster! Couple that with no DT over 300# and we get pushed around in the middle on double teams with ease which creates even more lanes for the QB.

It is something we have not figured out yet, but next week we have a much better matchup as Vandenburgh is not too mobile and is a pocket type passer. The bad news is they have a battering ram at RB, a decent OL, and a difference maker at WR, and a decent TE to keep us honest.

It won't be easy and if we win it will be a close one, hopefully we can recover from a crushing loss that we played as poorly as I can remember in several phases of the game.

Welcome to the board Corn Boy. One diff between 2003 and now is that back then we were trending down from having won three MNCs. Pelini, while certainly not perfect, has us trending up from a dismal 2007 season--our worst season in half a century.

You think making changes in assistant coaches is going to help. What more changes can be made. Let's take a peak here. Tim Beck is first year OC and qb coach. Ron Brown is first year RB coach. John Garrison, first year as a coach period. Rich Fisher, 1st year wr coach. John Papuchis, 1st year full time whole d-line coach. Carl Pelini, 1st year full time d-coordinator, Ross Els, 1st year linebacker coach. Corey Raymond, 1st year secondary coach. Throw in all the youth and inexperienced players and this year could be considered a fresh start. I guess this staff just needs more time to develop the needed chemistry, esp. since it's Bo's 1st complete staff of his own. Lasty-and this comment is not directed at the op-how many folks on this board predicted 3 losses before the season even began but yet are the same one on here in meltdown mode calling for coaches heads and this and that when 3 losses actually happens. It's hypocritical, bandwagon bs.
