Just Playing What If...

All-Conference
I'm not trying to start rumors...set off heated arguments defending one guy over the other...or pointing out Callahan's wizardry with the media. I was just thinking 'What If'.

We obviously have all heard about the supposed 'tight race' between not only Keller and Ganz, but also that Beau Davis has really come into his own and that Witt is looking good. And as a coach, you always want everyone to think there is plenty of talent at any position and of course there is always someone nipping at your heels.

Now most of us annointed Keller the starter for '07 as soon as he bought his airline ticket to Lincoln....but what if he didn't get the starting job?

Here is a guy that was upset that he was not named the starter at ASU for his senior season and he chose to transfer, sit out and use his last year of eligibility with a new team, new conference, new system, new climate, new everything!!! If we are supposed to buy in to this quarterback race....Just some questions if Keller is not #1 on the depth chart for opening day:

1. What would it do to his self-esteem?

2. What would it do for his 'supposed' NFL future?

3. What does this say about/credibility of the coaching staff? (As I am sure they pretty much guaranteed him the job if he came.)

4. What kind of message does it send recruits/other players?

Again....just bored and letting my mind wander. Thoughts???

1. What would it do to his self-esteem?
Probably nothing. One reason he transferred is because he thought he was better than the guy they named as starter...

2. What would it do for his 'supposed' NFL future?
Now, that's a different issue. I think it affects his draft position - not whether he's drafted. And a lot would depend on whether he saw the field at all and how the actual starter performed. Too many variables, but I would assume a team would take a shot at him anyway.

3. What does this say about/credibility of the coaching staff? (As I am sure they pretty much guaranteed him the job if he came.)
I don't follow. Credibility with whom? On the one hand, it boosts credibility because it shows that the coaches go with the best player. The only way it hurts credibility would be to assume - without any evidence whatsoever - that the coaching staff promises starting positions, coupled with recruits who believe that they must be promised starting positions. As for the former - as noted - there is no evidence at all. As for the latter, we don't want those kind of recruits.

4. What kind of message does it send recruits/other players?
See above.

Exactly !

yes, boredom is an off season affliction. i don't think you even need to consider the "what ifs" here.

OK let me put it this way. Put the shoes on your feet....

After years of loyal and fairly good production at YOUR job, you find out one year before you retire or get a big bonus that your job has been outsourced to a subcontractor. The company doesn't fire you, but you are not given a paycheck and are told "Well keep you on call if things pick up/your services are needed".

Instead of sitting around to wait, you receive a call from another major company who happens to have an opening for someone with your qualifications...but the job is in Montana. You go anyway, because you need to work and earn a paycheck.

Once you get there you go through training....and at the end of training they hire a baby-faced college grad that has shown that 'go gettedness' the company likes to see. You are again, not fired, but told you'll be the first to contact if they need help.

One thing I keep reading is Keller left because the coach dropped him to #2. Of course that is true, but the main reason was because the team requested it. That worries me.

I still wonder if he will be here when September gets here. I have had a bad feeling about him since day one. But we all see his potential on the good side, but he has a lot of negatives.

I hope he sacks up and makes all of us proud of BC'c vision. I hope that more for BC than anything else.

I could care less what it does to his self esteem.

I could care less about his NFL career.

I seriously doubt he was promised the job.

It would show me the coaches honor talent and character.

It would show them being the best at your position pays off.

See my response in another thread Skers... Not only do I not believe that the team requested it, but rather a few induviduals, but I believe that the team had the utmost respect for Sam.

i agree, what coach is going to allow or even listen to a "straw vote" concerning who most of the guys want to see as the gb? this is a ridiculous thought, what next, take a vote as to who the kicker should be??

and since the kids here really like to play with Ganz, should we just shift him into the starting position based on a popularity poll among the team members? coaches who would pull that stunt wouldn't last very long at any school, sorry it doesn't work that way.

The unity council at Nebraska ended the career of Deangelo Evans.

I think the same set of circumstances happened at ASU.

I will research some of the Keller story if I can. I read alot about it when it was happening, but don't remember where it was at. Hopefully will have some time tomorrow.

He left under not so good circumstances. And there are two sides to every story. BC bought his side so I will end on not making any more comments on it.

I respect your thoughts, and want both of you guys to be spot on. We need Keller to be all he can be that is for sure.

Go home. Do some push-ups. Come back later. BURN THE PLACE DOWN!

Um....OK. Not sure why I was quoted, if that was supposed to be a slam on me or a very strange conclusion. But to each their own.
No, it wasn't a slam on you, it was a joke. Sorry for trying to lighten things up. You made a correlation to a job setting, and that would be MY first reaction. It reminded me of a Saturday Night Live skit.

Anyways... What do you expect Keller to do? Probably be pissed off as hell that he lost out on a starting job again. Like others, I don't really care about his pro prospects at this point, not until he does something wearing scarlet and cream.

Gotcha. Would have helped if I had gotten the SNL reference.

All I know is that if the depth chart comes out for the first game and Beau Davis is listed at #1, I am going to be watching a lot of Nebraska-Omaha games on Saturdays in the fall.

If that happens then I think the fire Callahan chants are a little more acceptable.
