I can't stand K-State and I think Ron Prince is a weirdo with some of the things he does, but you have to admit that beating Texas two years in a row is impressive.

Something else that impresses me is this... I heard on TV yesterday during the K-State game that Ron Prince wants Bill Snyder around the program. They make sure Snyder has an office and is welcome anytime. No, I was never a Snyder fan, but for the life of me I can't understand why a program with the tradition and wonderful history of Nebraska has seemingly closed it's doors to former coaches and players. I read that Osborne gave a pep talk to the Creighton volleyball team, which is kind of cool, but why on earth isn't he welcome at NU hanging out and talking with players? Imagine the stories he could tell current players! Why doesn't he have an office in the athletic dept?

Pederson wanted to put his mark on the program and if that meant distancing himself and the program from the past, that's what he was going to do. I don't really blame Callahan. If your boss isn't big on bringing in the past, how can you be, especially when you aren't from this area.

I believe it was Osborne's personal decision to not undermine what Callahan does by presenting himeslf as a threat to Callahan's authority. (He's said something to that effect). Not to mention his personal goals took him away from football. He retired. End of story. Having a legend hanging around when the players are doing poorly could be perceived by many as a Callahan vs. Osborne sensation story. Except Osborne doesn't want that, or even the appearance of that. He's a classy guy who understands what he's meant to Nebraska, but when he left, he left. There's no reason to have him hang around because he's no longer a coach or staff member on the team.

On special occasions, I'm sure the door is open, but I think Osborne chooses to distance himself. He does attend games, though, if I remember right.

well, i completely agree, this whole issue just chaps my a$$! This is the part about Ped that makes me sick and makes him look like a total jerk-off, which is exactly what he is. he is god and the boss and he can stamp the program as he likes, but i sure don't have to like it and i sure don't respect the guy for how he has abandoned the past. i still think it comes back to bite him in the a$$ eventually! :asshat

i understand that part, but NOT letting players from the past on the sidelines at games or access to practice or the players or coaches, well i guess they could infect the kids, eh?

 
There is an article in Husker Ill this week on Phil Ellis former Husker [92-95]. At the end of the article he states that he is proud to be a Husker but he doesn't see a lot of red carpet being rolled out for former Huskers. I thought I had read on here that things toward former Huskers had gotten better. Can't under stand why it would have ever have changed in the first place, if indeed it had. When I talk to people no matter where I'm at I tell them once you play for Nebraska you are a Husker for life and treated like family. So reading these post or stories is confusing. Are things that bad or have they been?

Do you think it was "his decision" or do you think he wasn't invited and, being the intelligent, magnanimous fellow that he is, foresaw questions about his lack of presence and decided to stave off negative comments by saying that he wouldn't be around? I think he cares about the program but didn't want to be divisive and did what he could to maintain the fan base.

Public statements are often more strategic than true.

It does seem weird, though. Even keeping the blackshirt tradition alive seems fairly hollow. If they had moved a former assistant coach up to DC, then it would be like 'yeah, he gets it.' But now, I'm surprised they haven't thrown a ™ on there. It's just a label now. It's like the old neighbors sold their house and moved away and the new neighbors are trying to act like they've been there all along. If they had given their home to their children, it would seem more authentic... The new neighbors might be good people, but they aren't the old ones and they shouldn't act like it. They should try to start their own, new traditions instead of trying to appropriate the old ones.

 
First of all, lets get a few things straight. Price was hand selected or nominated by Snyder, so it's very understandable why Price is very warm to him. Um, we fired TO's hand selected choice. I think it's obvious why TO doesn't have the red carpet laid out for him. I have no idea why former players aren't shown more respect other than their loyalty to TO and Solich which was pretty much pissed on by Pud.

 
If the Blackshirts are ever to mean anything agian, NU has to bring someone from that era in as DC. Otherwise they will continue to be a joke, and if that is the case i would us rather just get rid of them than disgrace what it means.

boy this post is spot on! a perfect explaination of what has happened to a proud tradition! the imposters running the defensive program have no clue, none, zero, nada, zilch!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish I could see some of the former players on the sideline more and see Osborne around the program a little bit more. While I agree the past is the past it is still tradition and to have these guys around would be of great assistance in this time of need.

But if you read the whole story Prince asked Mack Brown how he dealt with having an ex-coach always around(royal I think) Brown told him to embrace the ex-coach it's a win win scenario :clap
