Keller and Ganz

I was just wondering what your thoughts are on Benching Keller if he is really struggling early. Callahan knows how much this game means, but would he go this far?

Personally I think I would bench him, he still hasn't been consist in throwing even against Nevada, I want to win and if Keller can't get it done then I say throw in Ganz or who ever else could get the job done. This goes for any postition, if they are struggling they should be replaced at least IMO. I hope this isn't to mean or arrogant for me to say but like everyone else I want a win.

Even if Keller is struggling, it still could get much worse. To bench your QB is the answer sometimes, but not often, usually it tends to lead to a panic mentality by all the other players and bad becomes worse.

It looks to me like Keller's passes might be more difficult to catch because on the short ones, there's too much velocity (no arc to help the receiver judge distance before it hits his hands).

We might have less drops with another QB, but the tradeoff might be more congestion in the short routs due to DBs not respecting another QB's accuracy on the mid-long to long throws.

It's just going to take repetitions.

I don't think it would be the greatest idea to bench Keller this early in the season. He has had a year off from live competition and just needs to get back in the rhythm. Now that he has a home and road game under his belt with two W's it should take some of his nervousness away and allow him to play better with the home crowd against USC. You have to remember that people have HUGE expectations from him so I would imagine that is running through his head all the time.

this week? no.

But if by halftime of the ball state game, and Keller is still making bad decisions and making bad throws, I would give Ganz a shot to run this offense.

relax, Keller is not headed to the bench. he is still getting his game together. those knowledgable fans surely didn't expect miracles after a year off and having never played in a game with our stellar receivers?

Unless Keller wakes up tomorrow and can't identify a football, he won't be benched and Ganz won't start.

Well tell ya what just like what someone else had said if keller isnt going to sit for this weekends game, and if he dosent improve during the ball st game then thrown in ganz and see how he does.

Keller has done alright. He's not living up to people's inflated expectations so that's reason to bench him? lol He'll improve as the season goes along and he gets more game reps under his belt. His stats aren't stellar, but neither are they bad. Benching him would do nothing but hurt the offense.

why? What would that accomplish?

Not throwing 10 TDs and 800 yards after two games isn't a reason to bench someone. You gotta be kidding.

Thank the Lord you aren't the coach.

I am not saying not to start him, but if he goes out there and throws two picks to start with. Against USC that won't cut it, I was just wondering if you would rather stick with Keller if he is playing awful or go with Ganz. Just like at the Millard West vs. Southwest game, Pederson sat VerVelde (starting QB) and put in Hauptman (backup) for the second half of the second quarter. That motivated VerVelde enough to come back and lead a charge of 28 points in 83 seconds for Millard West. Maybe that is what Keller needs, you never know. Espically with him being hurt so much by being benched at ASU, he might not feel like getting benched and come back out and light up the field.

Keller was picked to lead the offense for a reason. Even if he comes out with a bad start against USC there wouldn't be cause to bench him. Showing faith in your players, even when they aren't playing their best, is worth a lot...far more than some random chance of firing them up by a benching.

I maybe define "struggling" different from you. If a QB comes out and throws picks in the first 3 series or something and has a total breakdown in concentration, sure the coach has to make a decision. I suppose the most important thing for the coach to do is observe the QB, evaluate the reasons for the problems, evaluate the mental state of the QB and try to make a decision in the best interest of the team.

So far we haven't seen anything remotely close to a situation that might require benching Keller. A handful of mental errors and a few fly balls isn't going to do it. We haven't benched the WR's for dropped passes yet.
