Handling Cooper with care

Turns out we might not see true freshman wideout Khiry Cooper this season after all.

During preseason camp, Cooper was mentioned by the Nebraska coaching staff as being prominent among true freshmen in the mix to contribute immediately. But the 6-2, 180-pound wideout wasn't listed anywhere on the season's first depth chart released Tuesday.

"He's an interesting subject," NU wide receivers coach Ted Gilmore said Wednesday. "He's a very mature kid. I like his route running. I mean, he's very smooth."

However, "It's so unfair to think a true freshman is going to come in here and shine. The problem is, he's thinking. In that sense, he can't really just go out and play naturally. But he's a talent. I'm excited about him."

Is there a chance Cooper could play at some point this season?

"Right now, we're not putting any time frame on it," Gilmore said. "If it's not a deal where he can benefit from it and get tons of reps, we're not going to waste his (red) shirt.

"If I had any regrets from a year ago, we wasted Niles Paul's (redshirt). He didn't have enough reps in the ballgames to play him. I don't want that situation to repeat itself.

"The role he had on special teams, and the role he had in the offense, wasn't worth wasting that year."

I hope they don't burn any redshirts unless they are forced to do it. I still think burning Beck's redshirt was a waste. Unless we have absolutely zero depth or there is a chance these guys will go pro in 3 years, I hope we redshirt as many as possible.

Don't burn a year, it's not worth it. We need to keep the future in mind and not be totally caught up in this season.

What about the risk of Cooper leaving in three years? I wonder if they think (or hope) that is insignificant.

I would say of this recruiting class, he's the exception. He may very well leave after just one year for baseball. I'm guessing if he's redshirted it will because 1) the coaches don't think he's ready 2) he doesn't think he's ready.

He won't be able to leave for baseball until his junior year either. I'm sure he won't be redshirting on the baseball team.

since he didnt sign on the the 15th, he will not be eligible for the draft for 3 years. so Khiry will be with the Huskers at least 3 years.

so if he redshirts this year, now you are looking at possibly only seeing him on the field for 2 years.

so why not play him on special teams, fast, good moves......would make for a great return man.

I can see both sides of the red shirt issue with him. He could bolt but then again he may like being a part of something very special here at Nebraska and finish out his years.

I thought in baseball you could go anytime you wanted after high school? Idk, I don't follow baseball at all.

i follow it. more than i follow football, to be completely honest...

and no, you can't leave until after you've been out of high school for 3 years... you can either go pro after HS in the draft, or you can wait until your 3 years are up. Some kids (rarely) decide to go to college for a year, and go play independent ball for awhile, but that is just a stupid mistake that they would make.. if they are good enough, there going to be playing in the cape cod league.... I honestly believe if cooper came here with the intent on playing baseball in his future, he made a terrible mistake. he would of gone somewhere else. i think he has his sights set on the NFL some day, with the MLB as a "back up" plan.
