United Kingdom -- Police have been accused of leaving a two-month old baby in the back seat of a car after the driver was arrested.

Mark Williams, 32, says he is pursuing legal action after the child was allegedly abandoned by cops after he rowed with officers in Fonthill Road, Finsbury Park.

Mr Williams, an IT project planner from Watford, claims that police ignored his pleas about his baby son as he was handcuffed and led away.

He said: "I kept on shouting 'My baby! My baby! My baby is in the car! But he didn't seem to listen to me." Mr Williams was put in the back of a police van.

Witness Ray Clarke, a caseworker at Olympia House Care Home, Fonthill Road, said he saw Mr Williams pointing at his car as he was led away.

Zubeir Issa, owner of Pretty Girl shop in Fonthill Road said: "They just nicked him and left the baby inside the car."

Luckily, Mr Willams's partner Kim returned from her shopping spree in Fonthill Road just before her boyfriend was driven away. She was able to rescue her child after an officer handed her the car keys.

A police spokeswoman denied that the baby had been left in the car, and said that the officer had waited with Mr Williams until his partner had returned.

She said: "I can confirm police were responding to an emergency call at 1.30pm on Fonthill Road on January 12 when a car blocked a junction and was asked to move by an officer. The driver of the car made an offensive hand gesture to the officer and was stopped and asked why. He became verbally abusive to police and was arrested for Public Order Offence Section 5.

"The officer and the man remained at the scene until the mother of the child arrived to take care of the infant in the back seat of the car.

"The man was taken into custody and released with a Fixed Penalty Notice. No official complaint has been received by police at this time. If a complaint was received it would be investigated as appropriate.
