Larry the Cable Guy

Just watched him as a guest on "Hannity & Colmes" on Fox News. It was typical Larry the Cable Guy, dressed down and talking about his latest movie. There's nothing eventful here, but he was wearing a camouflage fishing cap with a white Husker "N". (Yes, I know he is a Husker fan.) Hannity joked about his dress and also mentioned his cap. Larry called it his Husker hat. Like I said, it wasn't anything eventful, but I thougtht I share that with you.

I realize he's a Nebraska fan, so I'll give him a little credit........but that Redneck/Blue Collar Comedy s**t needs to go away. It's not funny...never has been.

Just one man's opinion tho.

Other people think different. Besides if he "is not funny" then why the hell is a multi millionaire?

Hey folks. I hope you don't mind if I share a something with you.

My son is 15 years old. He is a sophomore in HS. He has played competitive baseball since the age of 6 and has played since was 3.

We moved right before this school year started. Last season as a freshman he hit 675 and pitched 24 innings and gave up 3 earned runs while striking out 21 .

This was at his old school.

You might be asking yourself, how does this relate to Larry the cable guy??

Well let me explain. My son and I sport our Husker gear everywhere. We are Huskers and it is something we are proud of.

He has had a very tough time with becoming (IN) with his new team mates regardless of how he plays.

My wife went to his game tonight and I now know why he is struggling to fit in.

The first couple weeks he was wearing his Husker cap to practice. Now apparently the have given him the Nick name (LARRY) after the comedian.

I know that it isn't really that bad of a thing but consider that you had tremendous success at your old school and your just trying to fit in and show that you can produce and you are getting constantly harassed for basically being a Husker fan.

Pier pressure is a b!^@h especially when you are at a new school.

I am trying to tell him to be who he is and sport his Husker gear. Don't let anyone take away who you are. It is really starting to bother him.

I am at a loss at what to do to help him.

Can anyone suggest anything please???

Kids wll be kids and they can be mean bastards to each other. Although it is tough on your son right now, you were correct in telling him not to let other people change who he is or what he wants to become. I would say advise him to use the crap they dish out as motivation to do better and let him know that some are probably lashing out at him because they are jealous of his ability and worried that they will not be the star of the team any longer. When a kid feels threatend they tend to lash out to make some one else (usually the new kid) look bad or to make themselves look better.

It sounds like your son has a talent for baseball and you need to make sure that he uses this experience as a positive reinforcement and not let it effect his enjoyment of the game.

Just my thoughts.

And as always, wear that gear with PRIDE

GBR

I agree uno.... My "good son" always wears a Nebraska hat and shirt. Used to wear a special Nebraska shirt when he wrestled. Of course, he got comments about being a Husker, but he could have cared less. I just told him the other guys were jealous and to use that for motivation. I hope your son kicks some a$$!

I'd tell him to just roll with the name. I've had plenty of baseball nicknames and sometimes you just gotta go take it and run with it, especially if they're doing it to aggravate you. Takes all the fun out of it. Or just tell him that T.O. had the nickname "Yak" in baseball and now look where he is!

That's why I said 'it's just my opinion'. I have no idea why he's a millionaire....reference my 1st post.

Just tell him to punch the kid that talks the most crap right in the mouth! That will usually quiet the rest of the kids as well. If he just sits there and takes it, then they will keep doing it forever! I don't know...maybe he can "accidently" let go of the bat when he swings.....hey I'm just sayin!!! lol

P.S.

I really don't mean any of this, but I do know that I can take on 25 five year olds in a fight!

Peer pressure - at that age, particularly - is overwhelming at times. I think the thing to do is to point out that eventually he'll be accepted, but that it takes time. If they see it's getting under his skin, it will just get worse.

More importantly, if he buckles under the pressure, he's essentially telling them that he can be a target.

If he loves something, he needs to acknowledge it and move on. What if he falls for a girl that the other guys kid him about? Would he dump her just because of the peer pressure? If he liked Pepsi and they like Coke, is he going to change just to please them?

Stress to him that if he caves to them he's letting them make decisions about his life. Is he willing to do that?

Ultimately, it comes down to this - is he going to think for himself, or is he going to let others do it for him?

Don't let it get under his skin...that's the most important thing. Shrug it off, laugh it off, whatever. He's a Husker fan, they're not, so what? No big deal.

They're *probably* just messing, too, not trying to convert him to be a Sooner fan or anything. If they can't respect his loyalty as a Husker fan, then well, they can't possibly be true fans of college football.

But don't think of it that way...just don't take any of the chiding seriously.
