Lavonte David last played in a three-linebacker set at Fort Scott (Kan.) Community College. During his senior season with the Greyhounds, he averaged 10 tackles a game and had 19 1/2 tackles for loss.
Last year, in his first season at Nebraska, the ball-hawking David often was the Huskers' only linebacker on the field.
He set a school single-season record with a 152 tackles, an average of nearly 11 per game.
So, which defense does David prefer to play in?
"I say the three linebackers," the senior said. "You just have to worry about your responsibility and do your job."
Well, David is in luck.
Nebraska's move to the Big Ten Conference means the Huskers will revert to a more traditional three-linebacker look. David will play the WILL position, Will Compton will play MIKE and Sean Fisher, who missed all of the 2010 season with a leg injury, will play SAM.
"I think it's going to be great. I think it's going to be easier for me," David said. "Last year, I was the only linebacker on the field, had to make all the calls on the field and things like that. But now, I only got one assignment to worry about. It should be really fun for me."
But can David realistically produce the same numbers that helped him earn Big 12 defensive newcomer of the year honors, and garner preseason All-America honors from several summer publications?
