So far, Roach has held his own. Wednesday, he worked with the top unit at middle linebacker, while last year's starter, Michael Rose, worked more with the second unit. While Rose may still be the prohibitive favorite to win the job, coach Bo Pelini said Roach showed well.
“I think he was a little rusty the first couple of days,” Pelini said after practice. “I thought today, mentally especially, he did a lot of good things. I think a lot of Trevor. He's got to shake the rust off, but I thought today was his best practice of the three. He got a significant amount of reps.”
Roach also made a big play in 7-on-7 drills, baiting quarterback Tommy Armstrong into throwing a quick slant that landed right in Roach's hands. Roach broke on the pass at the right time to make the play. It's that kind of experience, Roach said, that can help him in a competition for playing time.
