LB Trevor Roach Working with First Unit

So far, Roach has held his own. Wednesday, he worked with the top unit at middle linebacker, while last year's starter, Michael Rose, worked more with the second unit. While Rose may still be the prohibitive favorite to win the job, coach Bo Pelini said Roach showed well.
“I think he was a little rusty the first couple of days,” Pelini said after practice. “I thought today, mentally especially, he did a lot of good things. I think a lot of Trevor. He's got to shake the rust off, but I thought today was his best practice of the three. He got a significant amount of reps.”

Roach also made a big play in 7-on-7 drills, baiting quarterback Tommy Armstrong into throwing a quick slant that landed right in Roach's hands. Roach broke on the pass at the right time to make the play. It's that kind of experience, Roach said, that can help him in a competition for playing time.

I don't think this means much. Pelini said they are mixing and matching a lot of different guys at spots right now just to get everyone reps. Rose is a stud and will be our MLB.

I really hope you're right. He's got the mind for it, and clearly the athletic ability to dominate, but I also like his passion and attitude. He's a rally the troops kind of guy. Need someone out there who will speak up and turn things around when/if something goes wrong.

Doesn't mean much as already stated, but I really like Roach. He's a great athlete (at least pre-injury) and should know what Bo wants on D.

I don't think so either, although I was impressed with Roach a couple years ago when he played a lot in a couple early games after an injury. But it's also nice to see a walkon guy who's worked hard get a decent shot.

Sounds like Roach continues to get a lot of reps with the #1s. I'm sure it's still Rose's spot but Roach might be in the rotation at least.

Rose wasn't at practice because had class today.
Rose or Gregory? Gregory wasn't there. Didn't hear anything about Rose - maybe I missed it.

Edit: Nevermind. I see it now. You were right.

Nice article on Roach and what he's been through:

Trevor Roach would prefer to not be experienced in the task of rehabbing from a serious injury, but the game of football does not divorce itself from cruel subplots.
The Husker senior linebacker’s shaking head is confirmation, having twice picked himself off the mat after season-ending setbacks.

As a junior in high school, the Elkhorn grad tore his ACL and LCL, and ripped the hamstring from its bone, among other things, in the first game of the season.

It was a long road to recovery but Roach walked it. It was an experience not wished on anyone, though it did serve as preparation for what came down last year.

On the brink of heading into the fall camp as Nebraska’s lead candidate at MIKE linebacker, Roach suffered a “freak” foot injury in the summer that erased any hopes of playing in 2013.

Roach said he could barely move his toes for at least a couple of months. “After that, I’d just go until I could tolerate it.”

Same long road. He traveled it again.

“I think most of rehab is just mental,” he said. “You’ve got to stay positive.”
