Lets see if the brass supports the coach and team.

ESPN needs story lines, simple as that. They need drama. They get watched/talked about more if you are doing sensationalist pieces highlighting three-year old sideline antics and two-year old audio tapes than they will about updates on how well Jack Hoffman is doing and the nice things Bo has said/done. Sad as it may be, that is American "journalism."
Wow. I can't imagine the Jack Hoffman play getting more extensive and more positive coverage than it did. It was everywhere. It was an ESPY winner fer christsakes. It was a wonderful piece of PR that got treated as news across the board by both sports and entertainment journalists. And I've seen tons of follow-ups on Jack, too. Every one with a positive Nebraska message.

Non-paranoid viewers may also have noted that was the much loathed Ed Cunningham on ESPN saying Bo Pelini has taken a lot of unfair flack, defending Bo in the audio tape controvery, and declaring unambiguously that Bo Pelini has the program heading in the right direction and deserves to keep his job.

That was ESPN putting up the graphic on how few teams can claim 6 consecutive 9 win season.

That some folks think the media gave the audio tape more play than it did Jack Hoffman shows how determined some Husker fans are to maintain an insecurity complex.

I'll ask again. Were you ashamed of Nebraska when Tom was being drug through the mud?
That was a fairly isolated incident (and I was pretty young) - Bo has been doing this for 6 years now. Every year it's something, Bo wallows in the mud.

Do you find this unique to ESPN?
I find it unique-ER to ESPN. All broadcasters do this, but not to the extent they take it.

We've done this before, so I too don't expect to change your mind.

Even though I'm right.

Yeah.

We'd been pretty gleeful for years everytime an Oklahoma thug got in trouble and Husker fans loved blasting Barry Switzer. We never dreamed of telling the media to call off the dogs against Oklahoma and Miami when their players did something really ugly.

The Lawrence Philips story was really ugly. Tom had a case that what he was doing was right for Lawrence Phillips, but to this day it's almost unfathomable that Phillips was allowed to return and star on the team. Husker fans got really hypocritical. Suddenly it was all the national media's fault.

Not a proud moment, if that's what you're asking.

I trust you folks will boycott negative coverage of misbehaving players and coaches on other teams from here on out.

I guess I don't see the point you're trying to make here, Mr. Chamberlin. Other teams' troubles are covered by the media so Nebraska Fan can't complain when biased reporting is aimed at us?

That doesn't make much sense.

Is that what I, or anybody, actually said? No. I would like some updates on Jack during Husker game broadcasts, not recounts of 2010 sideline antics or 2011 audiotapes. Yes, Jack won an ESPY, and should have damnit. Has he been on ESPN much since then with updates? Bo's past antics and media/fan interaction is brought up in almost every broadcast. There are a lot of great things being done in CFB, not just with the Huskers. If you don't think these are passed over for BS sensationalist stories, I don't know what to tell you.

If there's an extension and if they pay to retain the entire staff, Bo and his assistants had better be willing to make some concessions of their own.

A top-to-bottom reevaluation of allocation of duties, beginning with but not limited to Special Teams coach(ing).

A realistic assessment of the effectiveness of play calling and both offensive and defensive philosophies.

A sincere effort to eliminate the "us vs. them" mentality of the coaching staff, and by extension the players. The fans are not "them." Mere words are not enough on this front.

There's more, but that's a start. I'm fine keeping Bo and everyone on the staff if it means doing what we're doing now, but there MUST be recognition that there are fundamental issues which need addressing and fixing. If that doesn't happen, I cannot condone keeping this staff intact.
Excellent post. +1

These are the 3 main (and possibly only issues) that simply must be addressed. I am absolutely fine with keeping this staff intact (even Beck) if they make some serious effort at these 3 things.

Special teams has to become a positive (or at a bare minimum not a liability). I get the feeling that the punt return is more of a philosophical/scheme decision by Bo than the special teams coach. I have trouble believing Bo would put up with this lack of result/execution against his will. But, a new unit leader should be expected in this area because it has been so poor.

Offensive play calling has also been troubling at times. I think Beck has the ability to dial up some good plays but I just don't think he can manage a game from beginning to end. There is little flow and setup and too much haphazard throw sh#t against the wall and see if it works. Maybe he'll get better with more experience, but I doubt it. At the very least, I hope Bo gets Beck some help in this regard or that somebody better takes more of an active role. I would like to see Beck replaced with a real OC, I just don't see Bo doing it though.

I expect defensive play calling will get more aggressive, which would be a good thing. It has to be as easy for Bo to see, as it is for most of us, that these guys do much better in a proactive attack mode than they do in, as True calls it "pretty princess patty cake patty cake pressure package". With the skill we should have in our front 7 next season, Bo has simply got to unleash the beast in these guys. It will be interesting to see if he can evolve to a more attacking defense from his more favored bend but don't break philosophy.

Eliminating the us against them attitude should be self explanatory. The very small number of fans and media members this might actually apply to as "them" is so small and inconsequential that Bo and the players should adopt an ignore them attitude instead of giving credibility to a minority movement that is undeserving of their attention.

As I review all 3-4 of these issues, it becomes clear that the only hurdle is Bo's willingness and philosophy. If he begins to evolve and change, he could stick around and be successful for a long time. If he doesn't see the need or feel compelled to address these things, I and many others won't "miss him when he's f'ing gone".

I think the defense got far more aggressive as the season progressed. As we get more athletic up front I expect to see that keep increasing. Watching MSU play last night showed how much of a gap there is between our front 7 and theirs. No way on 4th and 1 does Rose come over the top and stick the fullback short of the 1st. (in fact Rose looked pretty dang slow against Georgia).

Where I really saw it this year with the DL was how they lined up. Remember last year, and the first part of this year - when they'd line up 2-3 yards off the ball? Only team in college football I've ever seen do that. That changed somewhere in the middle, and obviously for the better. That patty cake crap stopped at about the same time.

Yeah was Rose hurt or was he just that slow all along and I didn't quite realize it?
The main time he looked slow was trying to cover Gurly on pass patterns (that I remember). That's a pretty tough assignment for a MLB, especially against a back of Gurley's caliber. And being on a sloppy field is a big advantage to the offense.

hurt, out of shape, had mcdonald's before the game. i don't think he was that slow during the season. something was up.

then again, Santo's did the same thing over the course of last year and ended up playing slower this season too.

Doing what for 6 years? Acting like half the coaches in the top 10? Oh... that's the difference. If Nebraska was in the top 10, most would not be complaining.
