If there's an extension and if they pay to retain the entire staff, Bo and his assistants had better be willing to make some concessions of their own.
A top-to-bottom reevaluation of allocation of duties, beginning with but not limited to Special Teams coach(ing).
A realistic assessment of the effectiveness of play calling and both offensive and defensive philosophies.
A sincere effort to eliminate the "us vs. them" mentality of the coaching staff, and by extension the players. The fans are not "them." Mere words are not enough on this front.
There's more, but that's a start. I'm fine keeping Bo and everyone on the staff if it means doing what we're doing now, but there MUST be recognition that there are fundamental issues which need addressing and fixing. If that doesn't happen, I cannot condone keeping this staff intact.
Excellent post. +1
These are the 3 main (and possibly only issues) that simply must be addressed. I am absolutely fine with keeping this staff intact (even Beck) if they make some serious effort at these 3 things.
Special teams has to become a positive (or at a bare minimum not a liability). I get the feeling that the punt return is more of a philosophical/scheme decision by Bo than the special teams coach. I have trouble believing Bo would put up with this lack of result/execution against his will. But, a new unit leader should be expected in this area because it has been so poor.
Offensive play calling has also been troubling at times. I think Beck has the ability to dial up some good plays but I just don't think he can manage a game from beginning to end. There is little flow and setup and too much haphazard throw sh#t against the wall and see if it works. Maybe he'll get better with more experience, but I doubt it. At the very least, I hope Bo gets Beck some help in this regard or that somebody better takes more of an active role. I would like to see Beck replaced with a real OC, I just don't see Bo doing it though.
I expect defensive play calling will get more aggressive, which would be a good thing. It has to be as easy for Bo to see, as it is for most of us, that these guys do much better in a proactive attack mode than they do in, as True calls it "pretty princess patty cake patty cake pressure package". With the skill we should have in our front 7 next season, Bo has simply got to unleash the beast in these guys. It will be interesting to see if he can evolve to a more attacking defense from his more favored bend but don't break philosophy.
Eliminating the us against them attitude should be self explanatory. The very small number of fans and media members this might actually apply to as "them" is so small and inconsequential that Bo and the players should adopt an ignore them attitude instead of giving credibility to a minority movement that is undeserving of their attention.
As I review all 3-4 of these issues, it becomes clear that the only hurdle is Bo's willingness and philosophy. If he begins to evolve and change, he could stick around and be successful for a long time. If he doesn't see the need or feel compelled to address these things, I and many others won't "miss him when he's f'ing gone".
