Martin, though, had been working behind Lavonte David at the other linebacker position, and the two spots are not interchangeable. So in the first game, against Western Kentucky, coaches started Alonzo Whaley, who'd been practicing behind Compton and thus had more practice repetitions at that position
Last week is when Martin began learning Compton's position in earnest.
"I tip my cap. Bo and Carl came in, and those guys worked (the linebackers) over pretty hard last week," Ekeler said. "The whole week -- I mean, shoot, I had the week off, basically. Bo was in the meeting for two days, and we've been on high alert."
