Look what happens when....

Steve Pederson is your athletic director and Bill Snyder is not the head coach when schedules are made:

(from Huskermax.com):

Nebraska:

Schedule strength 0.28571429

National Rank 100

Conference Rank 10

Kansas State:

Schedule Strength 0.57142857

National Rank 43

Conference Rank 3

It's a perfect storm of cluster f-ness that can happen only once every 100 football seasons or so. Yes folks, Kansas State's schedule is ranked 57 higher nationally than Nebraska's. Oh thank God this is the last year of SP's non-conference schedules. And with all due respect to South Dakota State, we had no business playing them.

Good lord that's depressing.

Although after last Sat, maybe we dodged a bullet ... chuckleshuffle chuckleshuffle

While I agree that playing the SDSU's of the world makes no sense. Strength of schedule is crap if you ask me. Play one decent team in the non-con and call it good. If you go win your conference, Big 12 or Big 10 next year, you'll be in the national title hunt, flat out. It simply doesn't make sense to load up with more than 1 good team in the non con.

Once conference gets rolling, the SOS will even out, somewhat.

I agree, even though Washington was supposed to be our 'tough' game, it turned out to be a cake walk.

If we become Boise State and go undefeated and empty handed, then you need to rethink who you are playing pre-season....

Bill? Is that you?

Next year we really do not have to worry about it. We have enough on our plates I think. One tough BCS team out of conference a year is enough. We have them for a while.

That is an extremely odd S.O.S. based on the multitude of others I have checked over the off-season. Phil Steele's S.O.S. rankings, for example, has us 24 spots higher at 76.

Not only has this sort of been TO's philosophy (1 name OOC, 1 decent, 1 creampuff), but it will definitely be even easier going forward. With a 9-team conference slate in the Big 10, Tom Osborne basically went out and said we won't be able to schedule tough teams out of conference, as it just doesn't make sense. I'm a bit sad about that because I enjoy playing name, recognizable teams early in the year.

Yeah, ideally I'd like to see an OOC sched something like tOSU's sched below. A decent team (Marshall), a top 20 program (Miami), and at least one cream puff. But I doubt we see TO getting games with the likes of Miami.

tOSU 2010 OOC schedule (#61 ranked SOS, per Steele)

Thu, Sep 2 Marshall W 45-7

Sat, Sep 11 (12) Miami (FL) W 36-24

Sat, Sep 18 Ohio W 43-7

Sat, Sep 25 Eastern Mich W 73-20

2011 - Fresno St, Washington, Wyoming

2012 - Southern Miss, UCLA, and a TBA

2013 - Wyoming, Southern Miss, UCLA

2014 - Fresnot St, Miami, and TBD

2015 - Southern Miss

2016 - Fresno St, Wyoming, Tennessee

2017 - Tennessee

So far looks pretty decent to me - but who can really tell until that season. That UCLA series might be on its way up, although who knows with Neuheisal (sp) there.

Our SOS for the future years will depend on how good the teams we face in the future will be. Recall when USC was added to our schedule they were down down down. When time came to actually play them they were world beaters with enough talent to beat the worst NFL squads.
