We've talked about Bo and the results on the field for a long time. And it needed addressed. It still needs to be addressed with moves at the assistant coaching spots, if not at the top spot.
But there is something else to consider in all of this.... the fan.
For years and years, Husker fans have turned out. They've answered the bell in recent years by turning out in force after disappointing losses. Their support has been fantastic and, tio this point, unwavering. Bo will, once in a while, give a slight nod to the fans if they, live up to his expectations in terms of being loud and giving that home field advantage. But overall, I just don't think he has ever done enough to let the fans know he appreciates them. Instead, on a recent radio show, he told fans that if they question his ability to adjust in games or adjust from Big 12 to Big 10 play, well, those people are assinine. Nice. And that we are idiots who could not possibily understand the compexities of football. Great. It makes you want to not care.
And then there's the divide in the fan base. Some of us are passionate about Bo staying. Some of us want him gone. But I have about had it with the fans who want to imply that if you aren't for the status quo, then you're not really a fan. Bull. We all want the same. We all want the Huskers to win.
What we really need is someone from the football department to unite us as a fan base and show us how much fans are appreciated and how big of a role that we play in games.
Coach Miles, it seems to me, goes out of his way to extend a hand of thanks to fans. Maybe that is because he knows that the basketball program, unilike the football program, can not just simply count on fans to show up and support the team. Miles wants to encourage the fans and thank the fans so that they come out and create an atmosphere of winning and an atmosphere of caring that are sure to help attract the players that make it possible to win games and possibly championships.
The football program can no longer take its fan base for granted. None of us say it, but a lot of us still think about what Bo said on that tape and wonder if, at the end of the day, he really coaches to prove doubting fans and media wrong. And when a win comes, as Barney illustrates, the move is to turn to the fans and media and say... we won nine games. How do you like that?
This has to stop.
The easy way to change this might be to fire the coach and hire someone who will not only help the product on the field but connect with the fans, energize and unite them.
Bo and his crew can still connect with the fans. Or at least they need to try to do it.
If that doesn't happen, and we are left in a divided state of being under appreciated and some what insulted.... look for a lot of fans to stop caring about the team. More bad results on the field will simply add to the overall misery of the fans and hasten their decisions to use their energies in support of something that leaves them with positive feelings, experiences and memories.
