Assistant Coach
McKewon: Grumbles aside, Mike Riley's pace of acclimating to Husker job is fine

LINCOLN Bo Pelini got fired on Sunday. Mike Riley stood in front of hundreds as Nebraskas new football coach by Friday. By the following Monday, Riley was conducting his first in-home visit with a current Husker commit.
Great coverage, as always by Sam, of Riley's efforts to hit the ground running as HCNU.

Cool quote by cornerback recruit Eric Lee, too:

“Riley put a calm to all the madness at hand,” Lee wrote.
And of course, this quick quip, poetic and true:

That's What Internet Do.

Sam & I had a brief talk about his take on message boards this morning.

Samuel McKewon ‏@swmckewonOWH

I've watched message boards swing wildly over the last 24/48 hours from frustration to happiness to questioning to all those things at once.

@swmckewonOWH This shouldn't be a surprise. Message boards are comprised of many, many disparate individuals, not one homogeneous hive mind.

@swmckewonOWH Each individual expresses their take. Depending on when you look, certain opinions may appear to dominate. It's an illusion.

@knapplc The hive mind can get going pretty fast on a message board, Really fast. Social media, too. They are not bastions of individualism.

I get what Sam is saying here, but I also think there's a bit of "they" going on. I have no idea how much time Sam spends perusing message boards, but if he's not touching base, reading conversations every day, it's easy to lose sight of the individual opinions. It's like watching an ant hill. It's difficult to see individualism in a chaotic environment, especially from above. And while I believe Sam and his contemporaries check in on message boards, there's what? Five or six reasonably active message boards specifically about the Huskers, there's Facebook, Twitter... and that's not to mention the radio spots these guys do, and occasionally they actually have to write an article or two.

Because they just don't have the bandwidth to focus on these boards and get to know the individuals, I think there's some loss of the nuances of each person's take on all things Husker.

Or maybe it's me - I spend way too much time here, so I see the facets of opinion pretty easily.

Anyway. Sam's right that boards can pretty easily gain momentum. We saw it with Tresselmania last week, and there are myriad other examples. In that respect, message boards aren't largely different than society as a whole.

I'd imagine they gravitate towards a select few (like all of us) and spend as much if not more time than any of us within them. I tried to read HuskerMax a couple weeks ago to get an idea if there was any sort of difference between the thoughts - and frankly the navigation, organization and familiarity I have with this board made abandon the thing within an hour or so. I bet each of them have their favorite hangouts and spend plenty of time there. They'd have a decent gauge on the loudest (Nupolo - now 74) individuals on the boards.

I am not 74. You're probably thinking of Knapp

I'm with you on the navigation thing. I've checked out other boards, even joined one and posted there for a year or so, but eventually the look & feel difference really annoyed me.

I was once told the local journalists are familiar with the names of the more visible posters on the boards. Made me feel bad for them if they spent too much time reading my drivel.

I lol'd at your last comment.

As for navigation and ease of use. Huskerboard outclasses them all. I have tried to bum around other boards just to see if there are different perspectives/thoughts/information. Just like you and KC I just became extremely annoyed and left. Kudos to everyone who makes this one work so well.

I agree that HuskerMax isn't the greatest board for a number of reasons. Navigating isn't a problem. I like 24/7 a lot. The crew over there welcome newbies and the navigation is pretty good. I'm still trying to see if I am accepted by you guys or not. LOL
